As above, I want to retrofit a Nyon display to my Bosch motor and it requires a new cable to be run. Dropping the motor out seems to be required and I am wanting to do this myself.
My questions for anyone that’s done it are:
Do you have to remove the cranks and chainring? I suspect not unless the bolts that hold it to the frame are hidden by the chainring.
Which leads me to question 2, where are the bolts need undoing? If anyone can point me in the direction of a diagram I’d be grateful… As far as I can tell there are three on each side and if it is only those three then no need to remove the chainring as all seem to be accessible. What I don’t want to do is undo any bolts that hold the motor casing together, by mistake.
Finally, assuming I can get it off, what torque do the bolts need to be done back up to when refitting?
Thanks
I’ve done it twice to an aluminium Rail and it’s 6 Torx bolts. The cranks don’t need to come off but having done it both ways it’s actually easier to handle with the cranks off.
The tightening torque may depend on what frame it is.
Try to make a video of how all of the cables are routed as it comes out too, some frames are very tight for space and it'll help knowing exactly where they go so you don't get anything trapped/damaged.
Thanks, I think the torque might be about 20-22Nm, I’m assuming some threadlock too - blue??? I’ll see what’s on them when they come out I guess.
I won’t get the display for another 2 weeks as it’s coming from Germany.. My LBS says Bosch aren’t shipping any at all currently due to chip shortages but I managed to find one on EBay so fingers crossed it’s OK.
Defo turn the bike upside down when taking the motor out
Slacken bolts then bike upside down and it’s much easier to lift out than have it drop out
It’s a heavy bugger
You’ll need to do tie/stick something to the old cable you’re removing, to avoid an hour ****ing about trying to thread the new cable through the correct hole.
You can probably guess why i know this.
Good advice there, I’ll certainly take note. Thanks. I’m wondering if just loosening it off might give enough access, especially if it attach the replacement to the existing cable. Maybe the motor will pivot if I leave one of the bolts in place…🤷♂️ I’ll try when I actually get the Nyon kit.
I dropped the motor on my Whyte e180 to fit a new rear brake/swap to Shimano from sram.
It was not easy. For my bike there were 3 t40 torx screws on one side of the frame and 5 on the other, then another 3 to allow the motor to slide out. I removed non driveside crank for ease but didn't have the correct tool to remove driveside so that stayed on.
What I found when I removed it was that there is literally hardly any room in the space for cables and getting the thing back together was a real fiddle.
Also, this won't be applicable to you, getting the battery out and then back in the Whyte was not easy at all.
Good luck!
