Does it work or do I have to buy a specific 10 spd chainset?
I'm sure someone must have tried it?

Yes it works just fine. My orange uses a rs8 9speed duo Chainset with SRAM 10 speed groupset
All fine

10spd ran ok on 8/9spd Deore steel ring.

i converted my 3x10 stumpjumper to 2x10 using slx 9 speed front chainset, no problems
