Hi STW,

I was all for building a 26" wheeled 13" frame up with my eldest (9) but I did the sums and tbh, the Whyte 403 is looking a very attractive option. She's currently on a Beinn 24.

Anyone got any experience of the Whyte 403? £150 cheaper than the Islabikes Creig 26 and only about 700g heavier.

Cheers 🙂

One of the juniors has one in the club. It looks fantastic...too small for me to try but it looks good with decent kit. Doesn't appear to be heavy either.

I'd get the whyte and put a 10sp gear system on it

Lad has got one, he struggled to adapt to the weight the first few rides but is now gaining confidence to throw it around. 8sp gears seem to have a good range, first climb out of 'degla no problem for him.

Was looking at self build but costs make the 403 a no brainer, build quality is excellent, some great touches for a kids bike. Just got to work out where I can get promax spare pads from...

Check the shape of them against other pads. They look like BB5 pads

Great bikes. My son loves his. Reasonable weight and good gear range.

Has anyone fitted larger tires and/or other wheels as clearance seems a bit tight?

I've just bought this for my 10 year old lad.....

Cost me £130 after a bit of negotiating. It needed a couple of bits changing but it seems to fit him quite well.

Interesting. Been debating one of these for my lad. But we're likely to give it another year yet till we go for it.

renton - what size frame? I'm trying to get a new bike for my ten yr old but he is 5ft tall already and the whtye 403 will be too small in a few months! I've been looking for a 26er with a 14" frame

Cheers

Neil

and what size wheels? is it 27.5? I was worried that would be too big and hard to handle?

first climb out of 'degla no problem for him.

Not sure that's particularly a benchmark climb is it?
(unless he's 7 of course)

The steep switchback near then end of the red, just after the seat in the semi cave.

Now that's a tough climb for a kid 😈

Thanks all 🙂

No "they're awful, don't do it" replies, so that's good. Only thing I can see needs changed is the shifter (she's likes thumb shifters).

The LBS do them, so I'll be able to get her a test ride.

First climb of degla will make or break your day if your kid struggles with it. He used to rip up it on his Islabike, but the 403 is a lot heavier, first time out was a struggle. He is 8 but a pretty strong rider.

Last time we went he spun up no issues. The last climb you mention he gets two-thirds of the way up, next time

Are you set on having suspension forks? Reason I ask is that my 7 year old daughter tried a Genesis Core 26 a couple of weeks ago and took to it straight away, so it looks like that’s what we’re going to go for next to replace the Beinn 24 she’s outgrown.

You'll do well to get a test ride. Only one dealer locally has any stock, Whyte have no more.

I'm very much debating a 403 now for my lad.

Although i'm also wondering if a Small 650B would be an idea and we hang on for a little while before jumping off the 24".

Bought one today, took it straight to Swinley Forest... it was brilliant, confidence inspiring and fun, jumpy, fast, everything you (well they) want in a bike.
