Feel knackered?I do.Really must try to fight it.Old apes.
50 next January. Most of the mates I ride with are 10 years+ younger so I have to keep going. ๐
Quite looking forward to next season as a Grand Vet though - less competition! Vaguely thinking about doing the Mega next year too, to celebrate.
none of us are getting any younger. except benjamin button.
Not far off and definitely creaking. However, just tried Strava for the first time and surprised myself with a couple of good results on local trails which has made me think I shouldn't write myself off just yet ๐
Just turned 50 couple of months ago, along with 3 other lads i ride with and well its just a number. Doesn't stop us from playing around like kids on bikes and ripping the p@ss out of each other. Might be just a freak club thing as we all ride single speeds though ๐ฏ and we dust the geared boys YAHOOO !!!!!
now the wrong side of 50 & fitter than ever.
Use it or lose it, so get out more often & enjoy it.
Think of age as a challenge & don't let it get you down, I ride with guys even older than me & they are seriously fast.
6yrs & 16 days to go for me.
๐
51 here. as fit as I have been for years if a chunk heavier
I'm going to enter my very very very late 50s on Friday. I feel fitter than ever.
Helped by a year iDieting, and a good couple of stone lighter, and feeling better because not eating so much gluten, which I had no idea I would feel better without.
Dropping a couple of stone in middle age helps you stay active for years longer.
I'm 56 and never been fitter thanks to road riding.
However chronically depressed and feeling like I'm ploughing a lonely furrow, would really like to retire, ditch the ball and chain and **** off to the USA and Canada for 6 months to explore different kinds of music and culture. Trouble is, we've a son aged 13 so I've another five years to go before he's off to uni and can look after himself.
So thats the secret, I need to go singlespeed.Mind riding my Banshee X wont be much easier, surely!
Saw a group of chaps at Penmachno a few months ago, I don't think any of them were younger than 60. Riding the same bikes and wearing the same gear that the rest of us do. Made me glad to see, too many older riders just seem to ride road bikes, and where's the fun in that....
Oh, yes - singlespeeding's the thing that keeps me strong too.
Aye, less than 3 years to go! Took up triathlons last year too. Will be doing an Ironman for my 50th (well, the Outlaw, but iron distance).
Obviously got something to prove to myself.
Fitter than I've ever been. And even the young girls at work (those in their early 40's ๐ ) say I'm lookin lean ๐
52 here. Age is (mainly) in the mind.
I'm fitter now than I've been for many many years thanks to mountain biking, 50 next year and like @hamishthecat looking at the Mega as part of the celebrations. For sure the aches and pains are there but I'd rather try and wear my body out than just let it fade away ! I like that cartoon with two old blokes sat in wheel chairs coved in a blanket with the tag line "we gave up beer and fags for this"
Great pic Pennine! 45 here and now looking forwards with a lot more optimism.
Mainly lack of energy is my problem.May look into strava and idiet. Not sure where to start and I do like my fruit!
Mike Hall got round the world in 91 days on McDonalds....
Jambalaya: have you got a link to that cartoon? I need it in my life ๐
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO- HOO what a ride!"
EDIT: have just Googled and the original quote is:-
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and well preserved piece, but to skid across the line broadside, thoroughly used up, shouting GERONIMO!"
Hunter S. Thompson in Hell's Angels published in 1966
I'll be 50 in July, and a couple of my riding buddies have turned 50 recently.
Other riding friends range from 18 to early 40s but we all join in with equal enthusiasm.
There are quite a lot of singlespeed riders amongst us, so that may be a factor (either that or we're all nutters;) )
Treat life like any other race, don't look over your shoulder & go like the clappers.
I do have some effects from aging tho - my hands and feet have arthritis and my tinitus is getting worse
56 in August & am always knackered. Except when I'm on the bike. For some reason I come to life when I'm on it. Did a 22 mile Lakes Loop over High Street on Saturday & felt pretty much ok. Been to work today, sat round on the wing all day & i feel shagged!
Not close to 50 yet but mid 30's and getting fitter every year. You 50 year olds must be FIT!
Impressive, encouraging stuff.
Is cycling one of the best sports for being able to carry on competitively at an older age do we think? I can't think of many others that would allow people to carry on competitively well into their 50's and 60's?

Can go a bit Pete Tong when you come off ๐
I'll be doing a full season of cross as well when it starts. And I've just had an email back about joining a track league. As well as keeping me fit, as I'm no contender. It has become my social life as well.
I've just ordered another BMX . . . 55 this year ๐ (that's years of age not bikes built since Jan 2012 ๐ )
50 in December. First Mayhem this month, no worries.
mid fifties

did 5 munros on the bike for my 50- th last year....its all in the mind !
52 here. Did the Enduro 6 in May and looking forward to my 10th Mayhem in a row this year. It's cycling that keeps me going really.
53 and still managing a few rides. Last year was biggest mileage I have ever done in the 8,000 mile area.
54 and fitter than most non bikers. Bit of arthritis in the shoulders from too many offs though ๐
52 a few weeks back. In our little group of happy mtb'ers, the next youngest two guys are 40 and two are under 25. We ride maybe 30 to 50 miles a week all off road. I'm not usually first down real techy trails, but I'm never last going up. ๐
Strange,I dont feel so tired once i,m on the bike. It's just motivating myself which is the problem.I think a couple of tough years and our new shit climate doesn,t help.Any good links on where to start with the i-dave thing.......Not suprised TJ has got arthritis either,as an old man he should have the sense to ride FS bikes instead of boneshakers.
I always knew italspark was a closet munro bagging redsock.
52. I'm not as fit as I was, I don't mend as quickly, but I'm still enjoying it.
My legs are buzzing now after tonight's club pootle, but that's just nettle rash.
pennine - :-)MemberI was 64ys old when this photo was taken. I'm now one of those 'miserable' old pensioners many of you lot moan about (and ride an orange 5!!!)
Older but none the wiser ๐
57 and just back from a weekend doonhilling at Fort Bill,
Knacked but in one piece.
Age is nothing to worry about apart from baldness! and hair coming out of every oriface!
This thread has cheered me, 45 here and ride with guys in their 30's now i know i've still got time to buy and ride more bikes ๐
