Looking for a hardtail for my son. Something around £500 and certainly sub £1,000 new and in stock. XC/road rather than enduro although XC/trail would probably work. He’s around 5’11” so large or medium probably work.

Alternatively I’ve got a 130mm 29er Pike doing nothing so could go fir a frame to work with that.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks folks. The Scandal was my first thought too 🙂 It's right at the top of what I'd want to pay, but has the advantage that I could buy the base model and drop my Pike into it (although the Rockshox 35 in there is probably fine). In fact, being Eagle pretty much everything is compatible with stuff I already have on my MTB, which is handy as I dare say I'll end up maintaining it (and possibly riding it too 🙂 ). Pity they only have stealth black left, but at 16 he may prefer that anyway.

The Vitus looks like a pretty good deal too and saves a decent chunk of cash. Being 27.5 means less compatibility with stuff (like tyres) that I have already, but on the plus side it does come in colour.

The Vodoo wazoo looks decent but doesn't really seem to offer anything over the Vitus and the "plus" tyres will probably make it a bit more of a chore on the road, which would be a fair chunk of his riding.

The Trek Marlin would work, but not sure I fancy a coil fork. Less maintenance though I guess.

More options than I thought though, as I was expecting everything to be out of stock still.

I see none of them come with mudguard or rack eyelets, which is a bit of a shame as he has talked about doing overnight trips with a friend. Still, that would be an excuse to buy some bikepacking kit I guess.

Edit: Would a whippet work with a 130mm fork?

Have a look at the Sensa bikes at Merlin. They are absolute bargains, and get some decent kit on for not a lot of cash. (Deore Gearing etc) They get good write ups too considering the brand. Also look at Forme

Just got a trek x caliber 7 in med from
my local bike shop theres quite a few 8’s around and 7’s if you can find a local dealer. Air shock RS Judy, fairly light and quick, shimano brakes and deore group set, mines for commute duties but should be a fun trail bike.

@roverpig

I’ve got a ridgeback ‘quest’ in a 19” size.
Metallic bronze triple-butted frame.
Rigid surly fork.
29x2.8 front tyre.
29x2.1 rear.
Topeak rack fitted.
Lightweight front rack, too.
Original deore disc brakes from 2008?
Drivetrain is totally shot.

I was going to sell the frame alone on stw’s classifieds.
But for the complete bike, I’m open to offers.

If you’re near Glasgow….

Thanks for all the pointers folks. Merlin had a Sensa Livigno in stock in large and it seems pretty decent for the (slightly discounted) price. It’s also a nice shiny blue so I’ve gone with that.

He’s almost 6’ and may still grow a bit, so I think a large will suit him better than a medium and the Sensa Livigno is at the XC end of things so should work well for road and light adventure stuff.

If I were buying for myself I’d go second hand but a birthday present for a teenager probably should be new.

Anyway, thanks again. This place always comes up trumps.

Put a shorter airspring in, about £20.
