Secondhand? Far better VFM than 2nd hand MTB's as in general stuff doesn't break or wear out. Pick out some new £1200 bikes you like, then set up saved searches on ebay for them 2nd hand.

Get a 2013 second hand Defy 1 for about £500-600.
