I've got some fox 140 for my fuel 9 build.
Feels fine but I need to keep height down at the front. I was thinking of leaving the steerer a bit longer than
I need with spacers on top of stem. Try it like this for a bit, then do final cut when 100% sure.
I also thought of flat but wide bars, but they all seem less than 700.

I'd agree it's worth leaving extra length on the steerer initially so that you can fiddle about with the height until you're satisfied.

If you still find the bars are too high, it is not unheard of to fit an angled stem upside down so that it drops rather than rises.

I've never come across a particularly wide flat bar, but this doesn't mean they don't ecist.

Measure once - cut twice

Salsa whammy bars are flattish and damned wide, Niner too.

Your steerer cutting plan is good. Get some miles in before you make the final cut.

But don't do what I did: 7cm to spacers above them stem on my first ride, ducked under a low tree, front wheel hits root, massive steerer stack jaws me hard. I fall off half knocked out.

I would definitely leave a little extra until you've ridden it for a while so you know exactly what stack height you want/need. Also, if you run them very low and chop all the excess off you are limiting the amount of potential customers when you come to sell them...just things to bear in mind before you get giddy with the hack saw.
Regarding bars, do they have to be flat or would 10mm rise be ok. If it would you can't go wrong with Renthal and they're 780mm

If you're just using a tape measure against your old steerer make sure that on the new one you measure from the crown race up, not top of the steerer down. *ahem*

Thanks all.
Just found some low rise 5mm or thereabouts that look good.
Any advice on a guide to cut straight?
Prob use an old stem.

Use a pipe cutter, like this:

Cheaper ones are available.

Also leave it as long as you can.

I'd always leave at least 30mm extra than I need as you never know when an impulsive frame swap is going to happen and you may end up with a longer headtube.

You might need extra length say for a angled head set. My choices were a bit 'cos bottom cup was not zero stack and I didn't have the 20mm or so on top for a tight grip. Got 1.0 not 1.5 deg cups.

Also, there are lots of 2nd hand forks but with 160-180mm cut that severely reduce their usefulness and saleability.
