Didn't the old fashioned cup and cone BB's effectively use angular contact bearings?

Aren't the SSC ones tapered roller bearings?

Based on other SSC BB's I'd steer well clear and just use XTR onesoff Rose bikes which workout cheeper if you intend to actualy install them.

There was a thread on here about a year ago regarding them, conclusion was wrong use for that type of bearing IIRC. I think sealing may also have been an issue.....

You shouldn't be doing the cranks up tight enough to be putting and side loading on the BB bearings. It's why the correct shimano tool can only be done up finger tight.

XT BB's for £12.75 each from Rose Bikes... And they last longer than anything else out there with the possible exception of Phil Wood or Chris King!

As soon as there is any wear on these bearings, and you adjust them to account for that, you are effectively running them as "angular contact".

Whether the loads on BBs are best taken by those types of bearings or not I don't know - non angular contact bearings can still take some side loads.

Yes - like cup and cone hubs

The angular contact surface allows the bearing to be tightened as the balls wear, giving a much longer life when you also factor in the grease ports that supply fresh grease and allow dirty grease to be forced out
