What app can I use on my android to follow these gps files to help me navigate in the woods?
Viewranger
I didn't like Viewranger myself (other than for downloading the two free OS tiles!) as much as I did Oruxmaps.
The 'follow route' option on Oruxmaps seems to work better to me and the route is shown with directional arrows rather than just an indistinct black line that Viewranger shows. Didn't seem to be a way to change it either.
Ok I used viewranger tonight at Countesswells, was ok, gonna try oruxmaps tomorrow. cheers for the advice
Toys, I would also reccommend www.gpsies.com as a great source of gpx files.
Buck53 - love Oruxmaps, but can't get statistics (speed, heading etc on the tc1 screen) to work - does it have to be turned on in settings somewhere? Cheers!

I use "Alpine Quest" on my Android phone. Works with gpx files. Map tiles can be cached for use when there is no phone signal. Various formats can be saved such as open street maps and aerial images from Bing (Google Earth is no longer supported). If you have the older OS maps from Memory Map on a PC you can also load them on the SD card and use them. I have the whole of the UK at 1:50K and Wales and other areas I ride at 1:25K on mine. I also use it to record my rides and upload to Strava when sat at the PC. I find it more stable than running Strava on its' own.

Alpinequest looks good, nice clear interface. Is there much difference between the free and the pay version?
also try back country navigator, there's a free 3 week trial available. 1:25 OS mapping is free (there's an initial one off fee of £6.99). The way to use it is to download the area of map you want using wifi at home, you can also overlay gps routes, record your own route etc
All on the website. I certainly didn't begrudge paying the £5, but I already had the OS maps on the PC.
I used Osmand a lot, it's really good (I liked it more than the other suggestions above, personally).
The main reasons I switched to a Garmin were battery life and dislike of having massive phone clamped to the bars!
Can't really help, I'm afraid. Only using for nav, don't record speed etc. when I'm on the MTB. That being said the one time I did look at that screen it picked up my height etc. straight away. I've found that it can have issues sometimes and does need the occasional delete and reinstall to keep things running smoothly, might be worth a try.

Wish it still was available and worked. I had it on my last phone and it transferred to the new one but it crashes on startup now. Sadly its no longer being updated or available.
