Off to Morzine in a few weeks was thinking of adding some extra gears and running 2x9 instead of 1x9, since we won't be just doing dh all day

Who's had experience with both, is 1x9 enough for the trails there or would I benefit from having the extra gearing?

If you're going to be doing some long fireroad climbs, having a nice low gear, something like 26x32 is nice.

Go 2x9 with a roller+bash guard. I found a 22/36 with 11-34 was ideal. 1x9 would need strong legs on a big day out if you're not relying on uplifts all the time.

1X10 was more than enough for me. 32/11-36.

Was enough for passportes with the extra climbing swiss bit and for the black 30something km trail route around morzine/les gets.

agreeed - 2*9 is the way to go. Some seriously steep and very long hills there, y'know.

I tried 1x10 (by not using the granny ring) for a while after I got my Five. But have since given up trying - not much chance of making it up the col du cou etc without a granny ring or legs like contador.

I did have 1x9 on my Nomad and did a bit of pushing - not so bad if it's too steep to even bother riding.

new Patriot will be 1x9 though - 34t and an 11/34 on the back.

I am going 1x10 this year not sure we are doing the col du cou this time and if I had granny ring not sure I'd make the big climb to the hut where you head left ๐Ÿ™‚
