Finally managed to find and order all the parts for my first ever from scratch build. Can't wait to get started when everything arrives, hopefully this month. Here's the list...

Pace RC529 frame
Pike Ultimate 140mm fork, 42mm offset
Mavic Crossmax XL 29er wheels
Maxxis High Roller EXO 2.3" tyres
PNW 170mm dropper
SRAM GX AXS drivetrain
SRAM Code RSC brakes, 180mm Centreline rotors
Nukeproof Neutron bar and stem
Hope headset
SRAM foam lock on grips
Shimano M8020 pedals (already had)
Fizik Tundra saddle (already had)

I had to make a couple of compromises due to parts availability but overall I am really happy with the spec.

Well, yiu did say critique, sooooo…
Your main mistake was SRAM and not Shimano.
I’ll leave it for others to talk about the rest.

Proper grips not available 😒?

That aside, not much to criticise will be a really nice build

Yep SRAM drivetrain not my preference and I’d have gone for a cheapo dropper but looks solid, that’ll be an awesome bike!

Foam grips? Really? Have you tried them and liked them?

Bars and stem seem a bit cheap compared to the rest

Ooh I’ll play. Interesting mix of very strong brakes but fairly weedy (2.3 exo) narrow tyres, and wheels... 24 spoke are they? Proprietary mavic ones?
I like foam grips .

enjoy!

I took the bars and stem off my Scandal for the time being. They'll get replaced one day. Probably with a higher level Nukeproof or a Renthal set up

I have tried the Evans own brand version of the foam grips and they were really comfy so went with the closest equivalent.

PNW dropper wasn't much more than a One Up so after reading reviews I went for it.

SRAM AXS is superior to anything cabled, SRAM or Shimano 😛

When I had my RC529, I wish I'd have gone large rather than XL as I found it to be a bit of a barge!

The only thing not to my taste are the tyres really. Get the pics up when it's finished!

I’ll look at things on the flip side and state that that GXAXS and Codes are a great choice.  Also I’ve ridden Morzine on 2.3 EXO with no issues, and I run 2.4/5 exos today on my day to day wheels with no punctures to date (I have a second wheel set for uplift days now), EXO is not an issue if you don’t ride rocky terrain imho.

Fizik Tundra saddle (already had)

Really flat and hard, I reckon a Gobi would be more hardcore hardtail-ish, but obviously it's all personal preference. My experience of Mavic Crossmax is that they're decent enough, but a pain in the butt if you need a spoke or spokes at some point. Particularly if you're abroad - take some spares with you - and even more so if you keep them long enough for Mavic to stop producing spares, don't ask how I know etc, but I've been through this with a set of Crossmax and Kysriums.

I always find stems/bars a bit of a trial and error thing on a new bike, but I'm stupidly fussy. Fortunately Brand X stems are only about 16 quid at Wiggle and work fine.

But all that notwithstanding, it sounds like it'll make a very nice build.

I'm glad I'm not the only person in the world who owns a set of High Rollers. Buying tyres is too complicated. I thought start with the Forkasters that were on the bike and work from there

29 er check

Under 2.4" check

Exo casing check

3c compound check

But had no idea they came in max speed and max terra

I bought max terra but they seem a bit soft to me

Best if luck with the builds and subsequent rides

I would’ve gone with DT Swiss wheelset and hubs - cos I always do where poss.

I like foam grips but picking thorns out drive me ocd crazy loco.

Otherwise fab. Enjoy.

I was looking for DT wheels, or DT rims to build onto Hope hubs but availability was the issue there. The Mavic wheels is one of the compromises I had to make. The saddle was another, using what I have and will change to a Gobi or a Fabric Scoop in the future.

There's a set of SRAM foam lockons on a mate's bike in my shed. The foam regularky slides away from the core on both sides leaving a half inch gap. They feel horrible.

Maxxis High Roller EXO 2.3″ tyres

wouldn't have been my choice. Shimano for the gears and brakes (bigger rotors too), would have went with a lyric or mezzer over the pike, different tyres for sure and DT swiss wheels or built up DT swiss rims.
