Family hols coming up near Albufiera - when I need to escape will I be better taking a road or mountain bike. Are there any suitable off road trails or nice quiet roads ?

Defo MTB. Most quiet roads are unsurfaced. Try to get a little inland before starting . Loule or somewhere like that.
There are often friendly races most weekends and many good routes are posted by local expats
p.s. If you get any trouble from dogs chasing you, pretend to pick up a stone to throw. the locals are so accurate that the wild dogs are terrified. also keep an ear out for 4x4 tours flying along and get well off track when you here one coming
