Question for you guys riding Alfine Hubs: Did you chose your gearing so you are mostly riding the 1:1 ratio-gear 5 on an 8 speed hub?

I've already got a Rholoff and they recommend using the 1:1 ratio- gear 11 on those for maximum efficiency.

Does the same principle apply with an Alfine?

Thanks,
Steve

Empirically, it makes sense.

I have been drinking today mind.

Isn't gear 11 on the Rohloff direct drive? I didn't think the Alfine had an equivalent.

I have mine set up like that - its basically a commuter nowadays but if you gear it so riding along on the flat is 5th gear you have a decent range of gears above and below that.

5th on the alfine is 1-1 but apparently not direct - I don't understand that but then epicyclic gears confuse me

Cheers Guys,
Yes 11 on Rohloff is a direct 1:1 ratio, this is the same ratio as gear 5 on an 8 speed alfine.

1:1 is said to be the most efficient, whilst not discernable to me in terms of efficiency, you can certainly feel some difference through the pedals, but the wheels still go round.
