Works normally in lower four gears but makes noises and then locks up in each of the four higher gears. Anyone experienced a similar problem?

not heard of that, usually if the dots line up in 4th it all works fine. dealer can always call Madison if they can't solve the problem.
Dots all lined up, not that. Has been fine, I suspect the trouble has been caused by me. I loosened the cones to change the sprocket before I realised that it is retained by a spring clip. I had not loosened them much at all but went for a ride forgetting to tighten them and half way thorugh the ride (20 miles) a curious noise started in the upper four ratios so I rode home using the lower four! I have subsequently gently re-tightened the cones but I suspect something has moved and it will need to be stripped and rebuilt. Now all I need to do is find an Alfine mechanic in Edinburgh!

I'm having problems with mine too. Despite being set up fine, it momentarily slipped into neutral causing me to fall of the bike. I'm glad I wasnt on the road as I'd have been under a car! Dont trust it now ๐
I'm having problems with mine too.
Duggie, I think my problems are largely my own fault, otherwise it has been fine.

I hadn't tightened up my wheel nuts sufficiently when I took my Hummingbird for its inaugural ride at Cannock Chase yesterday morning. I found out on the North Shore section.... (it must have amused the two guys watching). Numerous heatset adjustments, Avid Juicy brake pivot lost, Alfine cable tension all wrong (realised the yellow mark alignment issue when I got home), axle bolts retightened - it's a wonder I even got around!
bumbly 1 when you say makes a noise is this a clicking when the hub should freewheel? i have experianced this on another alfine i have worked on before, ended up stripping and re building the gear system. its quite straightforward to do, i have a link to a full colour step by step guide if you want
I'd like that link please. Would be nice to know how to [s]do more damage[/s] fix it if mine stops working ๐
Plectostomus, that is exactly what is happening. I have PM'd you.

So far I have tried two local LBS's who won't tackle an Alfine save adjusting the cable ๐ I have just contacted Madison to try to find one that will be able to do it but I would prefer to do it myself for possible future servicing.

After taking the plunge and opening it up, all was revealed. Two ball bearings from the large race had become dislodged and jammed the pawls on the higher gears. This was caused by me loosening the cones on the non drive side and should not happen in normal use. All is now fixed. Thanks for the comments and help offered and I promise to leave it alone in future!
