Has anyone been able to discover what the alfine oil is? You can get from shimano a tin of oil and an oil bath for them for IIRC around £60 but what is the oil?

Or can anyone make a case for what oil should / could be used.

Hypoid?
Synthetic engine oil,
3 in one?
ATF?

I put synthetic gear oil in mine, has made it shift smoother, cant notice any less drag though.

Assuming we are talking about 11 speed as the 8 doesn't run in an oil bath, is this correct?

Mines 8spd, gave it a petrol bath and a day to dry out first.

i've been using ATF (not sure if it's a good match)

degrease + rinse hub

dry for 1 day

soak in ATF for 1 day

working well for me , I've checked and repeated this process and the oil has been clean after 6 months use

The shimano instructions are not to degrease IIRC - their oil is supposed to work well with the remnants of the old grease.

Sounds a b1t weird tho

hubstripping website is work a read.

they recommend degrease + cleaning, I filtered out the degreaser for reuse and it was full of aluminium dust + dirt which would have stayed in the hub otherwise

I use EP80/90w gear oil and left the grease in. The only premature Alfine failure I have seen (one at less than 500 miles) appeared to be caused by corrosion of the roller clutch outer races causing the plastic roller cages to break up.

So I would conclude its not too critical what oil you use just so long as it is nice and oily in there.

I am tempted to try a thinner oil next time, like ATF (to reduce drag) but service the hub more frequently.
