There seems to be a glut of these Alex rimmed wheels turning up on mid range bikes . . .
What is the standard of these wheels like as a rule?

Perfectly fine, they've been around for yonks.
Had Alex rims on three bikes and they've all been great. 2007 Spesh Hardrock and the wheels are still true and are strong as hell. 2009 Spesh FSR XC and again the wheels look brand new. Broke a few spokes but the rims have been faultless.
Current wheels on my 456 Summer Season are Superstar hubs on Alex rims. I'm a 90kg bloater and the wheels have been solid since I bought them in January.

Yep, agree with above. Tough, high quality and happy to have them in the past.
