Considering an action cam for my 10 year old for Christmas. Will get used regularly on the bike so don't want cheap unbranded rubbish but also reticent to spend £200+ on it since he can't even go 6 month without losing a watch. Any suggestions?
I've got one of these:
Deal: AKASO Brave 7 LE Action Camera, 40M Waterproof Underwater Camera EIS 2.0 Native 4K 20MP Touch Screen WiFi Sports Camera Remote Control Vlog Camera https://amzn.eu/d/hTRohPs
Records decent enough footage, the app and user interface are good and once you've left a good review they send you a big bag of accessories.
I got mine in 2021 so there might be a better version released since then.
I bought an akaso v50x action camera which came with lots of attachments, batteries and plenty of videoing options. 4k and was recommended by someone who had done a comparison video on it against a more expensive option.
I rarely use it but it will be taken on holiday again for swimming and rainy day duties.
I guess 4k is 4k, but depending on use, the excellent GoPro video stabilisation will be the difference. Maybe?
If that's a requirement
I’d say used GoPro 7 black or later . That gets you a rear screen and posher stabilisation

Yup, depending on what you're shooting, the stabilisation is probably more important than pure resolution and 4K. I originally bought a Crosstour and it was OK for many things but for riding shots the stabilisation it was supposed to have just wasn't up to it. I bought a Gopro 8 a couple of years ago and there is no comparison.
What’s the minimum/oldest GoPro that’s got better image stabilisation? If there a sweet spot to go for?
The hyper stabilisation (sorry can’t reminder the brand name) started on the 7 black.

It’s called hypersmooth

Thanks. Mini-a11ys are keen for one for biking so I'll take a look. I'm less keen as I know who'll end up doing all the editing etc...
Go pro 8 Second hand? I just bought another from MBP for £155 for camera + charging dock as my lad (same age as yours) wanted one and I had an 8 already so have batteries etc. Add another £50 for screen protections/rubber bumper and mounts.
Yes its second hand (you cant tell TBH, like new) but the 8 was / is still a great camera with all the features you really need with fantastic quality footage and audio, plus of course the spares availability.
FWIW I thought one that old would be cheaper, but they seem to hold their value, I guess because actually there's not that much difference bewteen an 8 and a new one.
Made these notes from other posts:
For MTB stabilisation is key.
Many cheaper models have really good quality 1080p and 4k video but stabilisation isn't remotely close to that of a GoPro. Also 30fps is acceptable for MTB, 60fps just looks wrong, however 24/25fps is the best imo. Some non GP cams don't do 24 or 25fps.
I've used cheap ones in the past, only GP these days, although the Insta cams look good (not cheap though).
If you can get a used GoPro7 Black (I think the base 7 doesn't have Hypersmooth), not much changed in the 8-10. It's worth noting the 8 it has a fixed lens, can't be replaced if scratched.

Aye if you do buy an 8, be sure to buy the screen protection. You can get it from elsewhere of course, not just go pro. https://gopro.com/en/gb/shop/mounts-accessories/hero8-black-tempered-glass-lens-plus-screen-protectors/AJPTC-001.html or a rollcage - https://gopro.com/en/gb/shop/mounts-accessories/rollcage/AJFRC-001.html
I did both on mine so I can use it with or without. It may be a 7 is a better investment if you don't already have parts. I know the 9 was plagued with problems, Im guessing it all got fixed via firmware but worth checking out.
