before I do is there anything else I should consider? I'm after tough, shockproof, water res, compass, Alti Barometer etc. ( dont know if GPS is possible )
I also like the Suunto Core but am worried about its ruggedness.

What about the nike fuel band.
I personally think the g watches look like cheap ****ing big lumps of techno crap.
If you want it for cycling you may as well get something useful ?
