is the higher number the harder wearing / harder compound???

bigger the number, the harder the compound, as maxxis call them:

42A Slow Reezay (mega soft)
60A super Tacky
62A MaxxPro/eXCeption?
70A HARD!

40a slow reezy (stopped this one ??)
