i dont get it, obviously a standard QR is 9mm, so does this mean that 9mm bolt thru like the ones on superstar will fit a standard QR style fork?? how exactly does that differ to a standard QR and does it simply fit in without any modifications?? really confused how can you have a bolt thru 9mm on a standard QR fork?

the 'axle' bits on a regular QR hub are 9mm. the standard QR is 5mm. take the end caps off a hope pro11 ( for instance ), with the 9mm axle bits, and the hole in the middle for the 5mm QR, and bin. fit 9mm through axle ones ( like 20mm or 15mm ones ) which have a 9mm hole but are flush at the end ( nothing goes into the fork ). bin QR. replace with 9mm through axle, which still fits the holes in yer fork. done.
see?

ahhh i guess thats where ive gone wrong thinking then.....i assumed the qr' skewers were 9mm, never heard them being told as 5mm before.....so you couldnt just bomb the 9mm bolt thru one as a straight swap for a 5mm qr??? without changing/modifying the hubs etc?

Can a Hope XC rear hub be adapted to take a 9mm bolt through?

gcaster, IIRC no (and it would be a 10mm not a 9mm).
Hope Bulb's and Pro II are/were Hope answer for hubs that could be adjusted to take different axles.
The Hope XC was a pure cross country hub, QR only.

EDIT: If you are an engineer (or know one) you might be able to mill out a new Axle shaft that runs through the hub (it replaceable - as they break), but I doubt the amount of metal left on that shaft, that it would be very strong.

So is it worth it in terms of adding stiffness to front end or not?

jury's out. some folk say they can't tell the difference between a 20mm maxle and a qr fox float....
i think it's better. if nothing else it ( i use the dt swiss rws 9mm ) gives me a feeling of more security than a regular qr, just from the whole disc brake/processional forces thing. a peace of mind thing. YMMV.
