using a parktools chain check or equivalent if the checker just about sits in the .75 gauges does that mean the chain is buggered? its sits just about in the 1.0 as well, but more so in the .75.....
time to replace? and replace the cassette too automatically? given this chain is about 4 weeks old max and its almost sitting in .75 does that mean the cassette is also buggered bigtime?
im getting an annoying creaking when pedalling, and doesnt even have to be under load? could this stretching chain be the cause?
if it falls in it is worn.
if 0.1 falls in it is really worn
Wait until it is properly on the "1".
I've had new chains that aren't far off the 0.75!
Not sure on the creaking. Try another chain?
did it on a previous chain too 🙁 thats what made me change it..
i havent being lubing them very well neither, and when i tend to soak it in wet lube, after its gone into the rollers afters a few miles it does indeed stop...
it sounds like its the chain stretching, or just dry the noise im getting, not so much a creak if you get me?
im gonna replace the chain and cassette then, and go from there...
ive tried everything else imaginable, so if its not this then its either the gravity dropper, or something i have no idea about 🙁
Sounds the best bet- new chain and cassette, then keep an eye on the wear. I find that cassettes last for several chains, so long as the chains are changed when the reach the "1" mark. Beyond that the wear snowballs and a new chain then, usually needs a new cassette too.
I've had my last two XT M770 cassettes/SRAM 991 chains worn when just at the .75 mark on a chain wear indicator. Thought I could get away with just replacing the chain at this stage, but both times the cassette has been knackered too (gears jumping) and needed replacing.
Apologies for jumping in on the post, but has anyone got any thoughts/views on the XT cassette? Should I switch to a SRAM?
xt cassettes are great, some have said sram are slightly harder wearing but who knows. i just wear all my gear into the ground otherwise it costs a fortune trying to guess when to change stuff before it wears out.
the creaking could be your bottom bracket, saddles anything really..
I use a park chain guide. New chains are about 0.25 and ready to scrap about or just after 0.75. At 1.0 sprockets are ruined. Ps i mainly use SRAM chains.
My last XTR cassette was worn with a chain that just got to .75 🙁
So I bought another XTR cassette and will now rotate three chains through it to .6 or so, and then change to the older xtr and rotate the three chains for a while on that one.
Seems like a plan.
