Hi, I would like to convert my 7 speed carrera subway hack commuter to 9 speed.
I have the relevant crank, shifters, mechs, chain and cassette.
With regard to the cassette, is it simply a case of removing and replacing the 7 speed cassette with the 9 or will some changes have to be made to the wheel itself.
Thanks.
You might need a new hub.
if it's a Shimano hub,you should be able to just change the free hub,not the entire hub ๐
I've just got my "hack" bike up and running, steel Rockhopper, which has a rear wheel running v brakes on a Shimano c201 hub, I think the freehub is an rm480 ( not dead certain). The bike was originally 7 speed via shimano revo grip shifters. I've simply put a new PC950 9spd cassette on and fitted some old 9spd deore shifters. using the old Alivio mech, which was on the frame as I got it, just well cleaned up, I can get all gears.
Hi, I would like to convert my 7 speed carrera subway hack commuter to 9 speed.
Why? My commuting bike is 7-speed and the gears are absolutely bulletproof. It requires far less maintenance than my 9 and 10-speed bikes.
Thanks for the replies.
I have read that some 7 speeds use 9 speed hubs plus 4 mm spacers , so if this is the case I could be in luck
Unable to check till tomorrow .

My 7 speed set up works great sadly, absolutely no problems functionally wise.
But I wanted to convert my 9 speed alivio groupset hardtail (again faultless in operation) to 10 speed xt.
And I am more reluctant to do so as I have amassed lots of nine speed spares, multiple new cassettes, chains, cranks and rings even got a spare set new 9 speed shifters an mechs.
So I could I run my hardtail in its current spec for many years to come without spending a penny.
So therefore cannot justify going ten speed unless I can use all my nine speed stuff elsewhere.
What's worse my hardtail works perfectly,so all I will gain by changing to xt 10 so is some weight loss and a little kudos (sad I know).
