Am I right in thinking that and 8 speed cassette will go onto a wheel that originally had a 7 speed one without any other changes needed. (naturally the shifters will be different). The chainrings and chain are the same too, arent they?

cheers people.

Nope, won't fit.

8 and 9 speed cassettes/freehub bodies are interchangeable, but there's not enough space on a 7-speed FHB for an 8 speed cassette.

Chain & rings will be fine though, but it might be nice to treat a new cassette to a new chain.

Yup. What he said. 8sp won't fit a 7sp hub.

Highjack - can you use a 9 speed derailleur on an 8 speed cassette if you have 8 speed shifters? Or else do people still sell, for example, 8 speed XT derailleurs?

Are you sure it's a 7 speed specific freehub though? If you've had the cassette off and there's no spacer behind (3mm) then you're scuppered, but it's quite likely that it's an 8 speed body spaced out.
