This bloke here:

He's in the states, but has a pretty quick turn-around and the stuff he does is really nice - and not bad value ($35/£20 per ring) considering it's custom made to order.

hmm, homebrew might be the answer then, guess i was more keen on a 30t, but 31 is an improvement on 32... wonder what modifications might be needed to the cranks for the chain to fit (according to his site), not keen on butchering my xtrs...

Why do you need such a thing?

Extralite do a 30t 'inner' for a 2x9 set up, which fits on the middle ring position, unramped.

The problem is that the chain rides on the spider on anything less than a 32t, so you have to file a 45 degree chamfer onto the crank, so be prepared that you'll have to do that with any custom 30/31 ring.

not really man enough for 32:34 ratio with a 1x9 set up. am moving to the alps on a semi-permanent basis. i could run 2x9 (as i do now), but there are various issues with my frame which make this a bit of a pain in the ass. 1x9 was meant to make things easier. however, if what nick says is true, i'm not sure... shame the only cassette i can find which is 9 speed, AND goes up to 36t is a deore. might have to go down that route.

fickle, i know, but my bike is almost perfect, and i know what i want 🙁

I'd always thought 32t was the smallest possible on 'normal' MTB cranks.

Older 5 arm cranks such as middleburns can go down to 29 teeth I believe?

in terms of cranks, seems to be the case nike, however there seem to be a few custom rings available.

If you come here you can have a dose of MTFU and keep using the 32...

Middleburn?

But that's a Uno. I'm not sure you can fit anything smaller than a 32 in the middle position.
