I have a lightweight ti frame, will get it converted to discs at some point. I want the bike to be light so a SS is an obvious choice. But.... as a SSC SS hub can tak 3 cogs why not make it a 3-speed bike? A cheap road mech and a shifter, why not?
Has anybody done it yet?
Post the piccy if you have, please.
Or tell me why I shouldn't.

"Why would you?" is my question.

do it, I keep thinking of it and yep, I used to have an old dutch bike with three gears and a coaster brake, it weighted a TON!

if you think it'll work for you then go ahead. getting cog spacing right might be tricky and you'd need to be careful that the 'gap' between teeth at the back wasn;t too bad - you won;t be able to change up more than 3 or 4 teeth on the rear.

sounds like an awful lot of faff and weight for not much benefit, tbh...

8 speed Alfines will probably drop in price a bit now that 11's out?

if you are going to have the weight of a mech and shifter then why not just go for 9 at the back?

If you're going to have a mech, shifters, cables, sprockets then having three is no advantage over having 9 or 10 (or 8 for the luddites).

If there was a decent (for offroad), cheap, lightish 3-speed geared hub, that might be different.

Why? Because I'm bored. I'm thinking of reusing an old cassette for it.
BTW When my daughter outgrows her bike I should end up with a coaster-brake hub. Now, that would be cool!
