Was absolutely epic. 🙂
Still a bloody stupid thing to do when you think about it.
Anyroadup how did you do?
It was a rainy, windy boggy mess, and was epic. Did I say it was epic?
I got under 5 hours, slightly slower than 17 years ago when I was well under 4 hours.
Absolutely superb.
It was a rainy
You sure that wasn't aP uphill of you taking a break?
I managed a wee while walking with a bike on my shoulder, multitasking epic...
I've sat on my sofa all day 8)
Rumour has it that Biff from the Outcast completed it on a SS cross bike.
Why? I've no idea!
💡
It was bloody tough. Windy, rainy and dangerous. ****ing brilliant!

I did it on a single speed Pompino today. 4hrs:24mins was quite happy with that but another SS that I met earlier was at least 15 minutes ahead of me I think.
It was a bit grim going up Ingleborough in the rain and for 2 hills I was quite pleased with how things were going, right up until I bent my bars, took the top of my ergos and put a nice wibble into both wheels. I can't use my right thumb at the moment and I felt suicidal on Pen-y-Ghent as I couldn't put any weight on my left leg. Was 4 minutes faster than last year though, which was nice.

The Nicest Man in MTB™
Ta.
Nicest man in MTB+1
He's briefly looked after the twins on some demo days while I tried out some bikes, lovely man.
Or is that the most stupid bastard?
DavidB - you and I were swapping places all day. I was a bit worried you'd be DQ'd for your Midge Bars but didn't like to mention it. I was on the Black Genesis Vapour.
Well done on the SS though - very impressive 🙂
Your mate Andy might have to share that award with Dave Haygarth who did 4 20 something with a broken collar bone. Completely outrageous. The whole thing. But some things are more outrageous than others.
Why continue on with injuries which may make your future life harder, its only a bike race.
Well you've still got to get off the hill anyway. Then it's just a couple of miles one handed. Not to me obviously.
Why continue on with injuries which may make your future life harder, its only a bike race.
It's a man thing; you wouldn't understand it...
paul4stones I remember you, I think you might have passed me and gone up the road at the end. I just couldn't get the cadence on that last stretch and lost a few places.
Surely the midge bars count as drops, more chance of DQing me for mincing on descents I reckon.

He did, but had to borrow a front wheel after pretzeling his.
Nice to meet you Biff (Andy - Silver van!)
its only a bike race
Don't be silly now......
It's to do with the width of the bars. I've seen a chap checking with a tape measure at the finish before now.
I got tutted at and a slightly knowing wink for my 46cm wide (52cm at the drops) Salsa Bell Laps.
I was only spectating on pen y Ghent but have to say it looked bonkers and brilliant even the mrs enjoyed it
My absolute amiration to you all. Single speed.......bonkers
DQ'd for your Midge Bars
I saw those should have been barred from starting bars have been measured in the past
It was a hard day took me over 6 hours
So do I still hold the fixie record or has Rich snatched it from my grasp?
(I'm hoping the former otherwise I'm going to have to do it next year to snatch it back)

😉
Well that was interesting! Would I do it again?not sure. I have certainly never had cramp quite like that before. Good to meet aP on the start line. 😀
aP does that mean you'll be out for round one?
I was on the descent from Whernside and managed a pic of Andy's face, much respect to the man!
There's an image gallery on here and a whernside-centric take on the maddness here
Oh and to the guy who came up behind me pretending to be an aeroplane, you sir are a loon!
I've read the rules top to bottom. No regulation on bar width.
Used to be 500mm max. Thought it still was.
Is that the guy who made an airoplane noise?
That's Biff.
A very long day out for me that would have been shortened considerably by at least trying to ride the descents.
I did ****ing own the linking sections though.
Is that the guy who made an airoplane noise? That's Biff.
Yes it is, at least the face now has a name! 😀
I asked the question about bar width - thinking that perhaps these super wide flared bars were maybe not in the 'spirit' of the event. John Rawnsley says:
Hi Chris
We did not specify the width of drop handlebars as the standard drop bar is not more than 47cm. You must use the standard type of bars.

John

So I changed my Bell Laps for something more traditional.
Ah well, I think I mitigated that by riding single speed then. I'll DQ myself and go sit in the corner.
Richpips had a few mechanicals (you've not been near him have you Jon?) and still had a really good ride considering. I heard one of his tyres go off like a gunshot early on. Lost the chain later on, so I guess he was going for the new category of fixed/chainless record. It was bonkers out there.
Anyone see the kid in the black and white (Genesis?) kit?
Gave him a tube on Pen Y Ghent so he could fix his FOURTH! puncture.
Kept seeing him all the way round at the side of the tracks with his tyre off.
Also big thanks to the guy who gave me a shove on the arse at top of Ingleborough when I missed my pedals! Much appreciated.
Anyone know who got airlifted off Whernside? and more importantly, if they're ok?
Saw the pics of the big yellow winching the casualty off on Facebook last night.
Oh, and big well done to my far superior(than me) team mates in CROSSTRAX! Well done the boys.
Anyone know who got airlifted off Whernside?
There was a guy down with a broken shoulder near the foot of the descent, he walked down from pretty far up to meet the MR guys. Was that him?
There were a selection of ambulances going up just as I left, didn't see the chopper though.
The hardest bastard award goes to my mate Andy who stuffed his face into a rock and smashed it up a lot. He got up, unwound gaffer tape from him seat post, fixed his face and carried on.
Not entirely accurate - I was the rider behind him when he went OTB. Despite several walkers in the vicinty, most of whom just stopped and gawped at his eyebrow hanging off, there was only one who had a basic first aid kit. We moved him and his bike off the path and then used a piece of gauze and a roll of duct tape from the bottom of the walker's pack to hold his eyebrow on, then rode down to just after the first river crossing til we met up the MR blokes.
Props to him for carrying on though...
PS Sorry - hope the tape didn't take too much hair out when you peeled it off... 😀
samuri - MemberSo do I still hold the fixie record or has Rich snatched it from my grasp?

I've let you keep it for another year.
Next year it is mine though.
