2x10 why not

i'm faced with the need to replace a 3yr old rear mech, cassette, chainrings and chain because of general wear and tear. on the basis that all i'd have to get over and above the bits which are worn out would be a 10speed shifter are there any reasons that i shouldn't convert?

is 9 speed better wearing more robust etc. not really interested in saving a few grams in weight.

thanks neilsonwheels - wanted to stick with SRAM shifters otherwise they wouldn't match and i'd rather spend money on better kit rather than replacing for the sake of matching up

if wear is you number one priority,
then 8 speed is the way to go,
probably not the answer you want,

I haven't used any 10 speed stuff,
but I would think that wear would be worse,
everything is thinner,

I face the same dilemma when the time comes to spring clean the bike. The outlay for Sram stuff is heap big expense compared to the endless Shimano 10x bargains out there. Will probably stick with 9x for now.

Whatever you do 10 speed wise at present you will end up with a higher low gear, and a lower high gear
SO
You won't be able to get up steep climbs so easily
and
you won't be able to achieve such a high top speed

Loads of R and D went into that one!!!!!!!!

Stick with 9.

Is that right Billy? My understanding was with a 39 x26 front set up and a 11 36 cassette you'll get a low gear the same or lower than a STD granny 32 cassette?

Billy boy is right,
the top end is gonna be where you suffer the most,
but i doubt most people us 44x11 ratio on a triple setup,

on the low end 26x36 is pretty close to 22x32 cassette
but using a 34t cassette means its a much lower ratio

i've put the numbers into a gear inch calculator and now my brain is fried a bit 🙂

I have gone from 3x8 to 2x10 as I was fed up of having to search high and low for 8sp stuff.

Details are on the below BR thread.

Can't say I had much of a problem with the 8sp apart from noise at the gear extremes, but can honestly say I've not missed either the very lowest or highest gears of the 8sp.

The whole shifting performance has gone up a level or 3 with regards to ease of use and lack of chain noise.

I'm liking 2x9 at the moment although I would like to change my chainrings to a 29/30 - 40/42. AS far as wearing my brother in law is doing roughly the same number of miles as me but it's not looking like a major difference. The one thing about going from 8spd to 9spd was that when the mud gets into the cassette it skips... well with 10spd it's a little worse.

I changed from 9sp to 10sp just after Xmas. Not regretted it a bit, good spread of gears without having to worry about cross chaining. It cost a few bob but I needed a new chainset anyway, got X7 C/set from Bike24 in Germany for about £115. Got the rest of the stuff from CRC.
