Does anybody have a definitive answer as to whether or not this can be fitted? I am running 26-38 up front and want to fit a bash, but the net is full of very mixed messages. Anybody fitted one and know its OK?

I run an MRP XCG clamped behind the BB on that very setup.

That works. Stops bashes without being a full bashguard and you still get to see the pimpy chainset!

Thanks for that MP. However am I right in thinking thats a 44t guard? Does it not sit too far proud on the smaller ring? Do you have a picture by chance?

Im sure I saw a pic of a yeti factory mechanics bike (SB-66 maybe?) with new XTR and a bash. I guess Yeti could chuck a chainset on a milling machine though.

Is that a single chain-ring........I can't see a front mech?

Although it looks like the Bash and Chain-ring are both being run on the outer spider. I'm not familiar with the XTR chain-set, but surly that means there's an inner spider free and the set-up in the pic has been achieved with some longer chain-ring bolts and spacers? Therefore at Gamut double or E13 DRS should be workable....... 😕

Yeah it is for a 44T and no it doesn't sit too proud - at least not in my opinion. the fact that its back behind everything helps teh look. I believe they are gonna make some smaller ones but can't find any yet.

I'm having the same nightmare.
Bought a Lap Zesty 714 '10, told shop XTR with double and bash is what i want, fitted a M980, took home to fit my bash and stinger, found my bash is for 36 not 38, ordered a Gamut 38-40 P40, now the bash outside dia is too large to clear the direct mount mech (by about 2-3mm !).
Looking for solution, nothing on Chain reaction fits the bill, i then googled and found this thread.
I'm pissed and annoyed at the response and lack of customer service displayed, due to it being Friday or dealing with complete d*cks?

Spoke with Lap dist, they said no idea, speak with the Shimano dist.

I got put thru to sales and an arrogant £$%* this is how it went after i explained my above issue.

Me-Im after a bash to suit the M980
Him-Its not designed to suit a bash.
Me-Oh, thats strange cause the shop sold me it that way and to be fair it looks very much like it was designed with that in mind, i should think others would too.
Him-No, it wasn't designed for that, it has a different spider to the xc crank and wont take a bash.
Me-Well i think shimano could do with making one, as lots of people will want it.
Him-UK trail riders don't need or use bash rings. (really??)
Me-Well i rode a mates Yeti 5 with the same crank on the Beast and i was constantly worried about catching the teeth on rocks, so i want a bash for mine, but specific for 38 so it will clear the mech.
Him- Thats due to bikes not designed to run on UK trails, they have too lower BB's!! (i was astonished)
Me- Mines French, its a Lap.
Him- Yea well they were designed for places like Andorra, where its really steep, entirely different from the UK trails.
(forgot to say, well my mates Orange 5 has a low bb is uk made for uk trails and needs a bash, D**K)
Me-So they have no rocks over there then?!! how ridiculous, thanks for being helpful.

I can't believe the :
A) Idiotic responses
B)Lack of help & customer services from a UK distributor that i just spent £400 lining the pockets of for a new crank & XTR shifter upgrade!

I reckon they are getting it in the ear on this one and its a standard response to blame everything but the design.
I rode without the stinger, chain came off outer 3 times and started to mess up the shiny cranks.
Fitted stinger and NRS1 bash, never dropped chain but the chain in outer ring sticks over the diameter by about 5mm, so if i hit a rock the chain will be squashed.
Tried the Gamut and too large dia to clear the mech + the stinger wheel clashes in its lowest setting, its rotating with the bash.

Did anyone actually try to fit something like the
http://www.blackspire.com/C4-SuperGod
and grind an angle onto each spider face to match the cranks??
So far that looks like the only way forward, why oh why have Shimano not developed a bash at the same time, to suit a crank that looks like it was designed to take one....
Thanks rant over, any help out there, going back to the NRS-1 for now, or i may try an old lexan bspire i have and see if any better.

I'm not sure I understand the problem exactly... but does this help?

Trojan, I think you are being a bit unreasonable. You are after a non shimano part and you will be modifying the shimano crankset from standard. It's hardly surprising that the distributor isn't being helpful on this. If Shimano had a part to do this, you can bet they'd recommend that part and only that part.

I must admit, that if I was worried about a bash then I'd probably want to gear the 38 down for more clearance, rather than decreasing that clearance by fitting a huge dustbin lid bash guard.

RaceFace Light Bash Ring will fit fine (You'll need normal bolts). The 36t will just cover the 38t chainring.

You need to learn to set up your front mech then, or stop pedalling backwards, that's not a bash ring issue!

Also agree you're being unreasonable in expecting advice from the distributor on 3rd party products.

numlock

Do you have a picture of the raceface Light bash ring working on the xtr 2x10? does the 36t guard cover the 38t ring with the chain on that ring?
