Is it possible to measure chain stretch without using the special chain stretch tool gadget - if so how?

Secondly what's the best chain from a durability standpoint i.e. doesn't stretch too quickly. running an sram 9 speed chain and it seems to have gained 3/8s in a month....

thanks
m

you can use a ruler to measure chain stretch

What conditions do you ride in, and how often (and how thoroughly) do you clean the chain? Sram chains are pretty good from my experience. You might just have to pick up some OCD chain cleaning habits!

Shermer75, still too much wearable drive chain you need...

to really minimise wear and tear.
