Since I moved house my choice of singlespeed for a commuter has been less popular, I live underneath a steep ridge which means every ride starts and ends with a massive effort which recently has put me off commuting.
So I'm going to convert it to 1x9 (it's a Roadrat) and wondering what cassette and chainring sizes to go for...
And can I use and old MTB chainset (34) and cassette/shifter (34-11) with SLX derailleur/XT shifter or better off using road stuff?
And will an XT shifter work with a road derailleur?
Road and MTB derailleurs are the same,so an XT shifter will work with a road mech.
Gearing is up to you and the terrain - I use 48T front and 11-32 rear cassette, but my commute is undulating at best.
Replace it as it wears out - MTB chainset will get you going, the only thing a road chainset might do is foul the chainstay. You could try one though. Road cassettes are the same as MTB, just closer ratios normally.
I used a 45t front (Alfine) and a 105 cassette rear on my Roadrat

I run 39t and a 11-28. Needs to get up some local hills though.
130mm BCD c/set, BBG bash, N-gear jumpstop, 1x9, SLX cassette.
