As above, bearin' in mind it's for my commuter (95% road). is it worth considering a chain guide instead? Anyone foresee any problems with this?
cheers!

And what's a chain tensioner for? (sorry, numpty alert!)

No problems here using 1x9 as a commuter using a unramped chain ring and no chain guide at all

Thanks TJ but....erm......how big's your ring? ๐Ÿ˜ฏ would it still be ok to fit 46t and use a FD?
cheers

Dunno what yo mean by a FD

I use to run one, MRs TJ still does. 1x9 with a 36 ring. No bash no mech no nothing and chain dropping off is rare

i know someone with a 1x9 commuter that has the large 44t ramped ring in the regular position and it falls of frequently enough to be a problem.

I know someone who used a 1x9 with a 32t in the central position and it fell of less frequently but still frequently enough to be annoying.

Then i hear TJ does it with no problems what so ever.

Not flaming just saying it how i see it. ๐Ÿ˜€

What TJ said. 1x9, 36 unramped (Surly) up front, medium sized rear derailleur. No bash no mech no nothing and chain dropping off is rare.

My 44front 1-9 ships under the slightest pressure during gear changes. rarely falls off just spinning along, but its a nightmare when shifting

I did shorten the chain as much as possible and run the chainring in the middle position. We are talkin it dropping once a month or less - and thats a 5 mile a day road commute

Maybe the bigger chainring makes it worse? it must be an unramped chainring tho. All new components as well

Try it and see?
