I'd quite like to go 1x11 from 2x10 and my current crank has died so I need a new one. Can I get a 1x11 crankset and carry on using my 10 speed chain/cassette/etc for a bit?

I don't really want to just take off all the other stuff till it needs replacing, and it'll take me ages to make my mind up on the set up, and the weather's too nice to be out of action for that long...

it’ll take me ages to make my mind up on the set up

Let me save you some time:

11-46 Sunrace Mx8 and 11 speed kmc chain from bike-discount

SLX m7000 shifter, slx M7000 or XT M8000 Rear Mech from chain reaction

30 to 34 tooth NW Ring, maybe with spacers from Superstar components.

All in, about £160.

Order it now you can build it at the weekend.

It's almost although I have just researched this exact thing...

Ah... You need a crank as well... Should have read your post properly.

In that case there are some 1x11 slx m7000 drivetrains around for about £250.

Also, I appreciate that this doesn't answer the question either ..

I'll 2nd what Mr dope has said above, as I've just purchased half of that.

As far as I know you'll be fine with 1x11 crankset and 10 speed on the back. I ran 1x10 crankset with 9 speed on the back and it was fine

Most if not all 1x chainrings are 9/10/11 SPD compatible so yes you can.

Oddly I've also just picked up Sunrace 11-46, XT mech, SLX shifter, SRAM chain and Works chainring.

Popular time of year!
