thinking of buying a gps possibly and Garmin but the mapping software is only 1:50 scale , is this good enough to plan routes on the pc and download to the unit ? enough detail etc

1:50k is fine for the majority of riding. I personally find the main benefit of 1:25k is the marking of field boundaries.
I use a Satmap and have 1:50k of most of the UK and then 1:25k maps for my local area - Co Durham/Yorkshire dales.
