Don't bother, just fit a different cassette or chain ring to give you the gears you need

Surely all you'll need is the chainrings (assuming you've got a double crankset), front mech, shifter, cables and a bit more chain.

I already have a 10 sp cassette but want a double chain ring on the front. I can find loads of how to videos but none to convert to 20 speed?

Why do you want a double chain ring?

I'm assuming you already have a double crankset here.
Whip off the cranks, then the single ring (and chain retention if applicable). Get your new rings and front mech and stick them on. Cranks back on, resize your chain (it'll get longer, probably easiest to get a new chain). Fiddle with the gears until they work right then get riding!

No I do not have the chain rings, I'll have to but them. I want the extra gears to get up those pesky hills. It really is as simple as that
thanks

Photos of what you have would be more helpful.

You say "change back to 20 speed" which implies the bike used to be 20 speed. What was taken off to make it 10 speed?

I knew that when I wrote "back" someone might question this. I ride a 30 speed now with r chain rings, but have just bought a new bike with 1 x 10speed only and would like to get a 2 x 10. In fact most of the comments here and else where have explained that it is possible and not too difficult
thanks

The only thing to watch for is that a few bikes are single ring only. Not many but worth checking.

It might be possible to pick up all the kit easily from someone who's gone the other way?

Yes, it's a doddle as long as your current crankset accepts more than one chainring and you aren't using a short rear mech :0)
As above. Chainrings of choice ( + chainring bolts), front mech and front shifter (+ inner and outer cable.)

Pop your front chain ring off and fit your new ones, fit front mech and shifter and away you go go go

Front mechs are a little awkward now with a few different fitting systems so you will need to check the type you need.

Don't give up on 1x. You should be able to get to a big range of gears.

What size (how many teeth) is your existing chainring and cassette?

Check the back of your chainset and see if it has four holes for bolting a granny ring to, if it does, bolt a granny ring to it, then fit a front mech and shifter.

Whats the bike/chainset/rear mech, give us clue?

I think you've confused a lot of people by wanting to make your mountain bike easier to ride everywhere ๐Ÿ™‚

Easy start...
What frame?
You will need a front mech
Front shifter
Cable and outer
1 or 2 chain rings
maybe some cranks
maybe a new chain

easiest solution?
Pop down your LBS and get it done ๐Ÿ™‚
