I'm still fixing up my son's bike.

I couldn't get the rear mech to shift properly - it just wouldn't drop into the smallest sprocket even with the cable completely disconnected.

Putting on a 105 5700 10 speed rear mech lying around in the drawer-of-parts-that-might-one-day-be-useful, it shifts flawlessly - but there's a nasty rubbing noise.

No, I haven't managed to loop the chain over the bit of metal between the plates.

I _think_ that the 8 speed chain is just two wide for the plates. Does that seem plausible?

Would a 9 speed chain fix this? Or just order a new 8 speed rear mech?

It wouldn't surprise me

I found a 9 speed XT rear mech in the same drawer; it works perfectly (*).

(*) The chain was a bit too long before, now it's about right, but if the rear cassette is ever replaced by something with a wider range it will need lengthening.
