so can I use a 10 sp sram 2000 double chainset with a 9sp chain and rear mech?
Or should I just bite the bullet and go 10 sp?

I'm running a sram s1400 crankset with 9 speed shifters cassette and mech with no problems.

All my front rings are stamped with 9/10 speed, so I guess that is a YES.
