Right, after my solo attempt at 10 Under the Ben, Im now considering the Kirroughtree event. How do the courses compare and who is doing it?
Anybody?
Ill be in pairs there.
Kirro excellent course best of three imho ... Soloed it twice done it in pairs once.
Course last year didnt have many eating spots largely singletrack - doing it in pairs as i think the course will ride better at warp 6 not worrying about food !
After taking your advice about 10 UB, I managed 5 laps, which I was disappointed with. Planned for 7 and took an hrs break after 4. On my 5th lap, I felt I was going backwards on the long fire road climb and I fell off a few times in the rooty sections due to tiredness. Enjoyed it though and I think I will be going to Kirroughtree.
Its a mental issue mate .... I felt i was going backwards on that bit but just have to remember its only 10hrs....
excellent course the rooty stuff gave us something to look forward too . loved them bits !
managed 9 laps at 10utb my self but the bike said no to lap 10 as back wheel was ****ed . not ammused had 1hr 15 to do it and my slowest lap was 1hr 14 ........ ! Going to rebuild it next week my self - factory wheel build has been pish.
I'll be there but most likely as pit crew and babysitter - wife fancies giving it a bash so I'll get her bottles and bike sorted out and watch our daughter as the wife gives it a bash...
yes, tempted by 10 at tree as well, as part of our on going training programme can anyone recommend a good curry house near by to the course?
Najem Balti House?,9 Victoria Street, Newton Stewart
it's the only one in town (providing Google maps is telling the truth..LOL), I have never eaten there so I really can't say if the food is good or bad... ๐
The girlfriend was at the end of each lap to hand me some munchies or it would have been a diet of gels!! Gave me an idea as to where im at for fitness as Im using these events as training for the Keilder 100.
You are right about it being a mental thing though and now I know what to expect at Kirroughtree. Going to do laps of the red and black at Glentress at least once a week, with road miles in between to build up my fitness.
Any good campsites near to Kirroughtree?

10 at Kirroughtree has a brilliant course. Serious racers sometimes complain though as there's so much singletrack on it there aren't that many fire road sections for splitting up the pack and allowing easy overtaking. It's a way course than 10 Under the Ben's or 10 More at Moray's, in my opinion.
That said, I'm not sure if I'll be entering this year. 10 Under the Ben reminded me that these things can be less than fun if the weather is poor and I'm not sure if I can be arsed risking it again...
I'll be there again this year-might forego the hours snooze break I took last time after going out waaay too hard.Aiming for 10 laps this time but I secretly want 11! (its been my motivation all winter).
The Indian in Newton Stewart is first class. One of the best I've been to.
I will be solo in the 10 at Kirroughtree like others using it as a test for the Kielder 100 be interesting how far and how many laps I can do.
Not sure myself, like ChrisL I had a so-so 10UTB, it was great for one lap but I couldn't stop thinking "I could be out for a normal ride". VERY non-serious racer but I still found the amount of mincing pretty irritating if I'm honest, the first lap was a total waste of time. Then again I no doubt held up other people who would consider me a mincer but at least I was on the bike.
I figure 10 at KT is probably the best of the bunch though so I'm thinking I'll give it another crack. Then again it seems a waste to go to KT and not do mcmoab and talnotry hill, no matter how good the short course is.
As far as attendances, skill levels etc does KT differ from 10UTB? I think my main beef was 10UTB was just the congestion, and I don't want to begrudge less confident riders a chance to race but at the same time I'd sooner not be behind them! Mainly just that it's a hell of a lot of people.
to avoid congestion you just have to beast the first half lap ! to the pipe give it beans - never got held up once on first lap
"to avoid congestion you just have to beast the first half lap !"
Not an option with these legs
I guess I'm in the group that'd find that side of it the worst to be fair, I'm not fast or fit enough on the fireroads and ups to get into the front but I'm probably a more confident rider than most of the people back where I ended up in the pack... so it's just a worst of both worlds sort of situation. Where I was seemed to be about 50% terrified whippets, and 50% frustrated trail centre sloggers
trail rat is spot on bust a move on the first lap and you don`t get held up i was finding people bailing in front of me on big 5 inch full sussers going through the muddy bits a tad annoying. But then i was beginning to annoy myself near the end ๐ I suppose if you ride trail centers then that mud/root combo must be a bit hard but at least everybody had a smile on there face
I,m doin it in a pair this year i think, should be good, think there will be more single track as roadies were gettin good results and due to a lack of technical stuff ๐
BTW the food at the indian in newton stewart is awefull, the chefs wouldn,t know a proper curry if i made one and threw it at them. I dont even class they,re food as curry.

The mighty trail rat is indeed right. After starting about mid pack for the run ( cos i didn't expect to do well), i hammered the first lap in 33 mins which was 8th or so fastest so avoided all congestion. After that settle to a steady pace which you are comfortable with and you'll be fine.
Was hoping to do 10 at Kirro but wont be arriving back from holiday until 2 hours before the start so cant make it. Its a fantastic trails so top 10 - 20 would be my goal for that race. Good luck for those doing it

Haha so true. But I felt like a riding hero every time I rode over the rock drop at the start and someone was walking down beside me. Not often I get that feeling
I fancy giving Kirroughtree a go I'm guessing its mainly the red route with some extra fire road
was going for 3rd time third year but 2nd hand op 3 weeks before may well kill it.... Have booked as a pair with bro for 2nd year running but he's dropping out too :(. Great event, already booked Benromach jersey, but may end up as pit crew for the largish number of other Manx Mountain Bike Club members who have entered....
Oh and the indian, is very good - a bring your own beer job hmmm?
And whilst i'm no expert the route is good, especially the swoopy end bit - keeps me going each lap anyway!!

There really hasn't been much fire road in previous years. There's a bit of a digression down a natural section near the start, followed by a singletrack climb back up to the red (a bit after where you left it but mostly skipping climbing I think). Then there's one or two natural sections later on that cut out the further out (and more technical) bits of the red. IIRC you do the section before the White Witch (the bit with a hump of rock you need to ride over about 1/3 through) then drop down one or two more natural sections to rejoin the red return.
Just signed up + camping ,so I reeeeeally hope the weather is good ๐ฏ
Where is the camping, near the main car park?
I'll be there as a Solo. Never done it before so cant comment on course. If its half as good as TUTB it'll be great!!
The course is brilliant, rides really well at race speed - especially the last few sections. Fair enough it can be a bit difficult to get past people but most are happy to give you space to get by if you're vocal enough (politely of course!)

If this guy is doing it i'm betting on him for the win. He's my training partner and hammers me constantly.
*no pressure BDB*
If I hammered the first half of the first lap then I'd probably end up only doing 1 lap in 10hours I am not very good a sprinting start ๐
Looking forward to paced approach and to do as many laps as I can.
Could some of the Edinburger folk give me an idea of journey time to Kirroughtree.
Thanks
About 2.5 / 3 hrs max from Armadale so depending how long it takes you to get onto the M8, it will be about the same from Edinburgh.
