I'm putting together a bitsa for my rapidly growing daughter and was wondering if it's possible to go 1 x 10 with an old triple crank. I'm thinking of putting a narrow/wide on the middle chainring position and adjusting chain line with the BB spacers.
Yes, no problem, or you can do what I’ve done and use a 64mm PCD chainring in the granny ring position.
Thanks Andy, I might play with that to bring the gearing down.
I run all my 1x bikes on converted triple cranksets, ring in middle ring position using singlespeed bolts. I've never needed to adjust the chainline and it seems to be in the right position for the chainguides I've used too.
Exactly - why make it complicated, it's the MIDDLE position after all 🙂
And as you can go down to 30T and get 10 speed cassettes with ranges like 11-42, there really isn't any need to fanny about.
Good point about the chainring bolts, cheers. Could the granny ring bolts be repurposed for the single middle ring (I haven't got a bike in front of me so please ignore if this is a stupid question).
I’m using 26T Absloute Black elliptical rings on a couple of Liteville 301’s , with 11:42 cassettes. Chainline is around 46mm, as the AB chainrings are pocketed at the mounting points to shift the chainline outboard a bit.
If I’d wanted it more o/b there’s the option of taking 1 or 2mm of the granny ring bosses, but in the end it all works perfectly as it is.
I machined off the 104mm mountings on the cranks too.

That's very neat Andy.
