Just toying with an idea having spotted a Tiagra 4600 10 speed Flatbar Shifter for a similar price to an SLX or Deore 10 speed shifter...

As the Tiagra is intended for use with road mechs it should work to ping my older SLX 9 speed mech in the right increments across a 10 speed cassette thus saving me the cost of a new rear mech...

Anyone else tried this method as a cheap 1x10 frig? and does it work or is it a bit "Skippy" for MTB use?

Responses only from anyone who's actually tried it please...

I've used the SL-R770 10spd shifter with 9spd mtb rear mechs in the past and although they are officially compatible, I found they overshifted slightly, so I had to tweak the clamp bolt position to remedy it(this was on three separate setups, so not a one-off).

With road 10spd mechs it was fine, which is odd.

But I've also used 9spd SL-R440 shifters with MTB mechs in the past (on the mtb) and they were fine, so mixing road an mtb kit can be fine.
