Spotted a fairly tidy one on flea bay, thinking of having a punt, anyone know how much they weigh and can you build them up light enough for an all-day bike?

fell free to include pics if you have 'em,,thanks
Mark

Quite possibly the best bike ever made by Specialized IMO.

Its a beast of a bike when built up as intended and mine weighs in at a lardy 36LBs but it is in full on Alp duty with Fox 36 VanR's and a coil DHX 5 shock etc.

It was a considerably lighter with 130mm revelations and the standard DHX air shock but I have ridden this build round the Peaks and South Wales and kept it along (almost) with some racing snake types on hardtails up Whites Level climb before blasting away from them downhill.

DHX air shock had seal issues with a thing called stuck down which basically meant the shock didn't return back. Warranty sorted most probably but 2006 ones should be fine. Mine was til I swapped it for a coil

My s-Works Enduro has been all over Scotland, the Peaks, North and South Wales as well as Morzine and Les Gets. In its build I have it, I feel its a bit OTT for the UK so the hardtail gets it these days but 2010 will see it visiting Les Arcs.

When out in Morzine I bumped into a remarkable amount of 05 -06 Enduro's, considering they're getting on and there are lots of other bikes around these days that are built for the Alps.

The frame is still a current model (I think) or certainly was about 12 months ago in the US where the lardy yanks just love them.

S works should come with DHX 5 air with its stroke reduced to 64mm ? from 70? but, if its larger than a small, it can have its stroke put back to where it ought to be to get 160mm of rear travel. Small frames the rear wheel will hit the seatpost tube though.

Here (was) mine.

TBH with 36's its never going to be that light, even this one with full XTR and tubeless was 31 lbs, but I guess with the newer long travel forks it could have been 29 ibs.

It did everything, but I found it'd get me into trouble rather too easily...

I found my '06 Elite got me out of trouble more times than I care to imagine.

It weighed in at around 34lbs in fairly stock guise, but could be brought down to 30'ish at a guess.

It did me fine as an all round bike for a couple of years, but when my dwindling fitness coincided with my mates increased fitness, I found lugging it uphill (and even on the flat sometimes) was becoming a chore and I wasn't enjoying myself. For anyone with any decent fitness it'll be fine though. A better platform shock for all day riding wouldn't go amiss.

My '08 S-Works is a breeze to ride all day, but not as confident downhill. I prefer the overall package though, but still miss my '06 occassionally.

A mate of mine was lucky enough to get a S works frame last year
£ 250.00p Like the above This bike is still quoted by Mags today
with new bikes out now regarding angles etc.
So if you found one then buy it, mate loves it

i had an 06 enduro pro and thought it was the best bike id ever owned............. until i tried to ride it up a hill!!

to be fair it went up hill ok but you needed to plod up them rather than stick with your mates on there shorter travel rigs.

but come to go down the hills and my god, the thing could really get you into trouble!! they absolutely fly!

really confidence inspiring bikes for the down hill bits!!

here is mine with a fox coil rear shock..........

[IMG] [/IMG]

it weighed about 37/38lbs in this guise, hence why it was a **** to ride up hill!!

now sold and got this .............

[IMG] [/IMG]

first ride out today and my god !!!! its so much better than the enduro for all day riding.

Absolutely fantastic bikes until the chainstays snap. Spesh will look after you if its a new frame.

Mark-CDO, let the forum know if you get one....

You'll only regret the weight until you get fit enough to ride it uphill. 🙂

I got one a couple of years ago and built it up with revelations and light but strong kit - great bike but too wallowy and tiring on longer rides
I've now converted it for pissing about in the woods and on the hills, with 66s and a coil shock, it's transformed the bike, especially the coil shock
best bike I've ever had

I had one for 4 years. I snapped the chainstay three times. The first two times Spesh replaced the stay (only) under warranty, with the second replacement being the beefed up version. The third time I only cracked it (yes the supposedly beefed up version) but I also found that I had a crack in the main frame, on the butress that splits the seat tube so that the damper can pass through it. Spesh gave me a whole new frame, a 2010 Enduro.

Here's the thing; if you buy off eBay, YOU WONT HAVE A WARRANTY so be really really considered about it. It would have to be a bargain to justify taking the risk as there are a lot of stories about the chainstay (it's always the non-drive side) snapping; it's not just a one off.

But having said that, it's probably the best bike I've every owned (apart from the one I have now).

If I had one again, I'd stick a Fox 32 150mm with 15mm axle or a 150mm Revelation on it. That would make the thing with decent components sub 30lbs.

Many thanks for the input everyone, I know they're a much loved classic, and obviously for a reason - I've had several stumpy's and love them but hanker after something stronger. Still need to get uphill regularly though, the Pitch idea has just made life harder as well, much head scratching to do.....

I replaced mine (and a carbon XTC) with an On One 456, and then this was replaced with a 456Ti.

Using the same build kit, it possibly goes slightly slower downhill, but certainly quicker everywhere else - and (touch wood) hasn't got me in to trouble at all.

I know I will get flamed for this, but surely that's the last place you would ever want a bike to actually be slower!

Agree best bike spesh ever made. They are coming somewhere close with the 2010 bike if they can sort the fork out. I have a 2005 version. DHX 5 coil option. Mine weighs in at 36lbs with the original 36 talas.

Interesting note about removing the travel reducer. Does that count for the coil ?

And, yes, I snapped the non drive side stay. Spesh replaced the stay only but service was excellent.

Killer bike. I swapped the shock for a shorter one to slacken her up and drop the BB (local trails at the time had few rocks). I ran Z1 FR 150mm forks and it was up for anything - big rides to big gaps.

As for the weight, at the time I was fit and this bike felt light as a feather for the aggressive riding it can deal with.

My current SX Trail and zero fitness feels like I'm hauling a dead lump of iron uphill by comparison.

Obviously you've far bigger balls than me - and as my son says, "Dad remember you are the one driving home..."

I'm crapping myself now in case I snap my seat stay...

Saying that, it didn't enter my head yesterday when throwing it around Rivington. 😀

I removed the plastic spacer from my coil but now the coil has removed its plastic coating where it (just) touches the edge of the whatsit thingy that the shock mud guard sits on.

I loved my Enduro s-works but to be honest I found the M5 tubing on it to be a bit fragile. 2 weeks in Canada and a rock had nearly pierced on of the chainstays and one had put a big dent in the down tube by the bottom bracket. And a month later back home another dent in the downtube 🙁 Hind sight maybe I should of gone for the SX.

I love that! I have a 7 month old son and have been thinking how long it is before I can get him out on the bike!

I love that! I have a 7 month old son and have been thinking how long it is before I can get him out on the bike!

My 11 year old had his first big crash at Chicksands when he was about 7, broke the first of a number of helmets... So far 20" rigid at 6, 24" HT at 8 and 24" FS at 10.

The driving comment came about after I was paramedic'd to hospital after crashing following him down DH3 at Aston Hill.

TBH I've 3 kids (11, 14 and 16), and all of them are quicker if purely going downhill - but put any kinda' uphill (or even flat) in the way - and the old-man whips them 😆

I've a 2006 Enduro Expert which is the same frame as the S-Works (I think, 6" travel anyway). Fantastic bike and I've ridden it round Welsh & Scottish trail centers as well as local (Surrey Hills) singletrack.

As others have commented it's not a bike to zip up climbs on, slow and steady is the way but you'll still get there. Weighs around 31 lbs....

The one on ebay is a 2005 by the way it has the 68.5 head angle rather than the 67 of the 2006.

Notter - suggest you weigh it..., my S-Works and full XTR weighed that

I have weighed it but only using the non-scientific "my weight with bike - my weight without bike" method.

Possibly more like 33 / 34 then, either way it'll still winch up climbs and have oodles of fun coming back down 🙂

The HA never changed did it? Never heard of it changeing anyway. They came with 2 shuttles to drop the angles back for downhill or up for climbing?

I'd have one, but have yet to find anythign in berkshire that justifies my 5" hardtail yet, let alone a full susser.

No I'm sure the geometrry of the 05 and 06 bikes was identical. Just kit changes for the 06. twas 69.5 or 68.5 if I remember rightly. I think the 05&06 SX trail was identical also & changed to a slacker frame with more travel in 07.

I'm currently running a 2005 s works enduro and its bloody bomb proof, regular clean and degrease is all it needs the only major problem ive had was the brain shock started leaking fluid and they cost a fortune to fix, so i just picked up a demo fox float from LBS and swapped out, no idea of the weight but trunning full xt kit and its no the best on the up hills but mega full coming down

Notter - sorry pal I'd say that weighs a tad more than 31lb. The S Works was made from a different alloy to the rest of the range and with it a bit lighter.

As for head angles, my '06 Elite came with 140mm Fox Floats whereas the higher end models had a 150mm fork IIRC so there were different HA's through the range.

My 2-penny worth, they're a great bike, had my '06 enduro pro for jsut over a year now and has been absolutely brilliant. It's taken some fairly stupid riding from me, mostly in error, and saved my bacon more than once!

I bought it in pretty much original spec and it weighed about 32lb, I got it down to 31lb with some flow/proII wheels and lighter tyres, but up to about 35lbs now with DHX coil, 36Vans and a joplin post, but hey it's all about the downs with a 150/160mm bike!

Overall I'd strongly reccomend one. If you keep an eye out in magazines, there's still professional guys riding them on shoots, last time I saw one was in am article on ibiza I think?(or some similarly small rocky island). They are a very well regarded frame. And a mate who rides pro downhill has one as his XC bike for the long rides!

The HA never changed did it? Never heard of it changeing anyway. They came with 2 shuttles to drop the angles back for downhill or up for climbing?

I am pretty sure about this but the HA didn't change on the regular Enduro, i.e. not the SX, but what did change was that they moved from Fith Excrement air cans to fox DHXs between 2005 and 2006. That resulted in a small change of the eye to eye which in turn did slacken the HA off by half a degree. So with the two shuttles the options were 68/69 versus 68.5/69.5 in 2005. Also, the two budget models from 06 came with 130mm forks and 137mm rear travel via a shorter eye to eye and shorter stroke shock. This didn't change the HA but it did drop the BB (I ran my 05 like this for two years and it was brilliant).
The SX changed massively between 05 and 06. Previously it had been simply a coil sprung version of the regular Enduro and then for 06 they changed the geometry quite a bit, making the HA much slacker, changing the shock dimensions and the chainstays.
