New Fox 34 SL fork targets new breed of XC racer

by 10

Fox 34 SL goes up to 130mm travel, accepts 2.5in tyres, boasts increased bushing overlap and weighs under 1,500g.

Press Release:

Fox Unveils the All-New 34 SL: Unequalled XC Capability.

.

Fox is redefining what’s possible for short-travel mountain bikes with the introduction of the all-new 34 SL. Designed for the most technical World Cup XC courses, and to match the increasing demands of these short-travel riders, the 34 SL brings unprecedented capability to a full-width 34 chassis with up to 130mm of travel — all while maintaining a World Cup race weight.

The new 34 SL builds upon the legacy of the class-leading 34 Step-Cast, delivering enhanced stiffness, improved suppleness, and more travel. With the demand for 130mm travel growing among XC riders, Fox engineers developed a fork that pushes the limits of short-travel suspension performance.

..

Key Innovations:

Full 34 Chassis – Unlike the Step-Cast design, the 34 SL utilises a full 34 chassis with a larger volume air spring, allowing riders to choose from 110mm, 120mm, up to 130mm of travel without compromising weight.

More Travel – Now available in 130mm, without a weight penalty, the new 34 SL gives you the suspension advantage to climb faster, descend harder, and recover quicker, so you can keep the hammer down.

Redesigned Arch and Crown – A generatively designed arch increases torsional stiffness by 17% over the previous 34 SC, while increasing tire clearance. A new 7000 series aluminium crown features larger internal lightening bores and a black anodised finish to further reduce weight.

...

Increased Bushing Overlap – With 20% more bushing overlap than the 34 SC, the 34 SL delivers enhanced smoothness giving riders better tracking through rough terrain, especially at higher speeds.

GRIP SL Damper – Designed specifically for short-travel applications, the GRIP SL damper optimises pedal-to-bump efficiency, ensuring a lightweight package with unparalleled ride feel.

GRIP X Damper – Available in the 130mm chassis, the GRIP X damper brings trail-forward capability to the 34 SL.

Inboard Bypass Channels – Relocated from the aft side to the inboard side, the bypass channels improve small bump sensitivity and reduce dynamic friction for a more responsive ride.

Weight Optimisation – Featuring the ultra-light Kabolt SL axle (-12g), double-butted stanchion tubes (-9g) and refined full-width lowers, the 34 SL weighs in at just 1475g (29” 130mm GRIP SL) – 40g lighter than its closest competitor.

....

The Future of Short Travel

Built to meet the needs of modern XC racers, the 34 SL sets a new benchmark in lightweight, high-performance suspension. Whether tackling the gnarliest World Cup XC tracks or pushing the limits of short travel bikes, the 34 SL delivers stiffness, responsiveness, and weight savings in a class of its own.

Lightest XC Ecosystem

When you combine Fox SL parts – 34 SL, Float SL, Transfer SL – you get the lightest overall complete XC suspension and dropper system from any leading brand, 333 grams lighter than our closest competitor with equivalent spec, and 489 grams lighter than the competition’s electronic XC system, both of which offer a maximum 120mm travel fork vs. Fox’s 130mm max travel.

When it comes to weight, Fox’s SL ecosystem is by far the lightest. And with more travel.

Twin Stick

Today’s XC courses demand a unique combination of capability and efficiency. The Twin Stick Lever combines the functions of both cable dropper post and cable suspension lockout in a sleek and unobtrusive design.

Based on our proven under-bar Transfer dropper lever, Twin Stick uses a mechanical system of ramps and catches to operate smoothly and reliably with low lever force, making it easy to actuate even in the middle of a race while fatigued.

Twin Stick is compatible with either 2 (Open, Firm) or 3-position (Open, Medium, Firm) suspension lockout systems. It can be set up for fork only, shock only or fork and shock simultaneously.

Weighing just 66 grams (76 grams with clamp), Twin Stick is the lever that ties together FOX’s Super Light XC ecosystem.

Twin Stick Dual Control Lever – £184.95 GBP

  • Stupid question for the Fox experts – will it be possible to reduce travel on these to 100mm?
(Old but much loved bike with max 100mm travel and the fork is on its way out…)

Nice to see fox catch-up on this segment at least.

^^The 34 stepcast has been around a long time, it’s the 130mm that is pushing the boundaries for 1500grams.
I’m a big fan of the 130/120 29ers and still a closet weight weenie so this will be on my radar (when a bargain pops up)

For hardtail and bikes like a Flaremax this looks absolutely spot on. Might have to get saving!

Unconvinced. The SC 32 was a twangy mess & I remain unsure how a SC 34 with 130mm is going to perform. I’ve a SID 35 running 120mm & that really seems the sweet spot for a short travel fork.

I thought the 34SC was relatively solid, and way back when X-Fusion did a 34mm stanchion 100mm fork.
My need for this is due to lack of skill rather than shredding the XC gnar though…

Maybe the SC34 was – I genuinely don’t know. I do know the SID 35 120mm  AND the SID 32 100mm were both better than the SC32 100mm. Hence my concern that this new even longer SC34 will be a bit noodly..

    new even longer SC34

It’s not a new SC though is it?  Thought they were touting it as a new stiffer chassis with additional bushing overlap and not step cast so room for a proper damper and spring.  I’ve seen a couple of first ride reviews and noodles are not mentioned

I’m not gonna buy one but it’d be nice to stick one on one of those Chisel FS frames as a downcountry sled.

If my SID 35mm could have been changed to 130mm travel (like this Fox can)  I’d have kept it.

question for the Fox experts – will it be possible to reduce travel on these to 100mm?

From the Silverfish and Fox PR, it looks like 110mm is the minimum.

It’s not a new SC though is it?

They’re not calling this one an SC, but it looks to still be stepped in some lesser way.
