Much like in his two race wins of 2023, Jackson Goldstone totally dominated the voting in this category. Fair play that lad.
From his first-year-in-Elite results alone Jackson Goldstone arguably deserves this award. He won two rounds in his rookie year. No one else won more than one round. He ended up a close second to Loic Bruni in the Overall.
The fact that he also spent so much time off-track in various medical facilities is insane (as Rob Warner would say). The guy had surgery at one point in the season – and had to miss being able to defend his Red Bull Hardline title – but this was only after struggling through a round of the DH World Cup feeling decidedly below par. The round in question? Val di Sole. Oof. Where he won. Wow.
And how about his/the final race run of the whole World Cup season at his home track of Mont-Sainte-Anne? Wow again. That was freaking amazing.
Even amidst all the changes that have happened in the post-Red Bull era of Elite Downhill racing, there’s no denying that the actual racing is the best – and most genuinely competitive – it has ever been and young Mr Goldstone is big part of it. 2023 Elite DH will probably be remembered for being Goldstone’s nearly year, not Bruni.
The fact the he will arguably head into the 2024 season as favourite for the Overall is – you guessed it – insane. But true. And deserved. He is the best male downhill racer on the planet right now.
