    Track is a bit of a mystery to me. Even so these came as a suprise. Why wood not alloy or steel by the 60’s

    When I was at the Bike Show last year, I seen some wooden handlebars, looked quite nice actually.

    I used to have a wooden car.

    It had wooden wheels, wooden bodywork and a wooden engine. When I first bought it I jumped in and tried to start it up, unfortunately it wooden go. 😕

    We still regarded alloy as being a slightly stronger cheese in those days.

    I wouldn’t use alloy – all my rims were stainless steel.

    There were a few bamboo rims around too. I remember a set where the spokes looked like they were made of piano wire.

    My dad has told me that back in the day some track racing was on grass tracks and the wooden rims had a bit more give over the rough grass.
