I am just about to buy a new frame and also wondered further to my earlier query regarding rear drop outs i now wonder if i can fit my hollowtech 2 cranks to 83mm bb?

No. Some people have successfully fitted the "hybrid type" XT HTIIs (the ones with 48t big ring) to 83mm frames but with a fair amount of filing...
