I have a longing desire to get one which I never had with the other 3 versions.

Not me. Going back to my trusty old Nokia 3410 when I decide to buy a charger for it! 😆

I have a trusty nokia 2323 for work purposes battery lasts all week, the iphone will never replace it.

Not me, thought I could get away with just sticking with 3 but now they have it.
Want one, I really do, but the 6 week old off to my left is making me make stupidly rational decisions about where my money goes…
Still keep the baby though, she might do less than an iPhone at the moment but she is way cooler 🙂

EDIT- I hope that 3 don't have too tempting an offer, but I suspect they will be similarly priced to the rest of them so no real worries.

I will be. I've had a 3G one for a long time now and it does exactly what I have wanted, just a little slowly.

BTW the MobileMe service makes a huge difference to using an iPhone (especially if you have a Mac, too).

Have had the 2G, 3G & currently 3GS but would need to spunk £220 to buy myself out of this contract then whatever the 4G costs to buy, plus sign to a slightly worse deal as pic messenging will be 25p and not taken out of your allowance of texts, plus their limiting tinternet usage, plus blah blah blah!

    So it don't make sense.

Why don't bloody phone companys look after the people that have signed to new tech with them from the start?

I am not an IPhone user only because I use blackberry for work but wife is IPhone user. I would say I can see no reason why anyone would not get an IPhone they are excellent and only get better so far. I so wish we did not use Blackberry's in the office. So my advice to anyone go see the Iphone 4 before purchasing any new phone.

    Well I've registered my interest…

To be fair, I had the original 2G iPhone the day it came out, and loved it. Got an upgrade to the 3G when it became available, and it's a great phone. Didn't bother with the 3GS cos I didn't feel it moved the game along at all (and would've meant signing into a contract when I knew the 4th Gen would be on its way), but will definitely be getting a 4th Gen ASAP…

because they make more money if they charge you to switch?

when you started the contract for a set period what did you expect?

God knows how much it's going to cost to upgrade, oh well, i'm sure it will be worth it.

A little customer loyalty considering I moved form Vodafone to O2 to have a 2G from them on day 1, plus the repeat business this ensures.

Yes i'm aware they have lowered the buy out option to £20 a month of existing contract left but do feel a little like they think we're all just rich Apple fanboys.

DOes anyone know if there going to fix the prices again between the companies? My current vodafone contract is up and im unsure whether to change to O2 for the iphone. Is it possible I might get a cheaper deal to get me to swap/stay?

I've registered my interest and will wait to see how much it's going to cost first (I will probably buy one SIM Free and stick with my current contract). Currently I have an HTC Desire – the iPhone 4 is no better*. In fact, it still lacks some of the features found on it's competitors ('proper' multitasking, 'proper' bluetooth etc). However, because I'm a complete gadget junkie, I will, at some point, get one.

I'll try it against my Desire. Loser gets eBayed (thankfully the iP4 should hold it's value pretty well, as with previous models).

*Yes, I know it has a higher resolution screen, but the difference between it and the screen on the Desire is negligible IMO. It's not a selling point for me.

MMM my contract is up soon and I've wanted an iphone for a while. I'm going to see how much the i phone 4 is and see if 3gs prices drop at all then will have to make a tough decision between the two! Either way I'll get one!

Munqe-chick: If you have the choice between the 3GS and the 4, do yourself a favour and go for the 4 (even if it costs a bit more). You'll only live to regret it for 18 months if you don't!

    Fatblokefromwarwick:

You signed a contract. O2 are not legally entitled to offer you the option to end your contract early. They are perfectly entitled to turn around and tell all of their customers to see out the end of their contract before they can upgrade, or charge them the full monthly amount for all remaining months. At the end of the day, you want to cancel your contract early so that you can have the iPhone 4. O2 are saying fair enough, but you pay £20 per month for each outstanding month for the priviledge.

Sounds fair enough to me. The amount you pay for your existing contract included the subsidy for the phone that you currently have. O2 are not asking for the phone back, so they have to recoup the cost somehow. Yes, I know they'll be making a tidy profit from it too, but they're a business. It's what businesses do and I don't have a problem with it.

It's not as if there are any hidden charges. O2 have laid out what you have to do. It's there in black and white and if you don't like it, wait until your contract reaches it's minimum term before you can upgrade, as per the terms and conditions.

I've been a loyal customer of O2's for a few years too – I don't expect to be treated any differently from anyone else? They've simply seen an opportunity. There are thousands of people in the same situation who simply cannot wait to get their hands on the iP4, regardless of how long they have left on their contract. Just remember that O2 could have just not given their customers the option in the first place . And it's not as if they're forcing you to upgrade early is it.

Lowering the buy out to £20 a month actually seems reasonable, as after a quick look the other day, £30p/m on an iPhone contract gets me the same* as I get for £10 a month at the mo. So that's £20 p/m "iphone tax"/subsidy.

Doing the sums, over 18months to get an iPhone on contract vs. buying outright on PAYG etc. costs you about £90 more.

DISCLAIMER: sums may work out differently for high minutes users, but I doubt it by much.

*actually worse, now O2 aren't unlimited data.

@ianpinder: I have found that Apple products are generally much of a muchness on their own and the real benefit comes the more of them you own. Of course that can get kinda pricey!

MobileMe on the face of it just gives you another email account but, on top of the obvious, you also get a really well integrated calendar, location services for your devices and a remarkable amount of integration with you Apple computer.

For example, I have an iPhone, MacBook pro, apple tv and an apple time capsule running as my Adsl router. I was working far enough away from the house the other week to be out of range and connected to the Internet via a 3g stick. I printed something and couldn't quite understand why it appeared to actually print to the router-attached printer inside as if "by magic". Turns out that MobileMe automatically keeps all those types of things available even when you are not at home. Really bloody clever and subtly impressive.

It's not perfect; I had an absolute nightmare with Apple when I changed my name but I'm still there.

I'll be getting one. I'll probably wait a month or two to make sure there's no niggles with the new one, maybe until my contract runs out in November, but I'll certainly get on. My current 3G has been a revelation to me. It just does exactly what I want without bother and a lot more besides. I use it every day, and use it a lot even after having had it for so long.

My Bro in law will be getting one….which means i will get his 3GS for a decent price and i sell the 3G i got off him when he got the 3GS.

Not bleeding edge technology, but bleedin' cheap 🙂

Maybe not free but I won't be paying full whack for it. O2 service and New tarriffs aren't good enough for that.

As my 3G is crammed full of OS maps, books and music, and my contract ended last month, the upgrade is a no-brainer. The cap on Internet use isn't as bad as some think, I stream 6Music regularly as well as Internet browsing all the time, and my total usage over 18 months came to 6.6Gb, that's 366Mb/month. The basic contract I was on was £30/month, with 75 minutes and 50 texts. The new base contract is £25 with 100 minutes and unlimited texts. A fiver extra gets me 1Gb/month. No problem with that. Someone ^ up there mentioned the Dell Streak; has he, by any chance seen or played with one? I did Saturday. The OS is excellent, it seems like a really nice machine to use. But it's enormous. People winge about the iPhone being big, the Streak's screen is the same size as a whole iphone! Using it as a phone will be like holding a Sony Vio netbook to your ear; carrying the thing in a trouser pocket's so not an option.
My iPhone has been in constant use since I got it, the new one will get used even more with more room for maps, (Viewranger ahoy!), books, (hello iBooks) and music, and a better camera with video. Can't wait.

Regarding the internet cap: i thougjt this was a bit shit, but checking my usage (in Settings menu) I can see I've only downloaded around 650MB since April 1st, despite streaming a lot of pornvideo, so probably not a biggy for me.

The lack of improvement in memory size seems like a bit of an own goal.

I guess that will come next year. Until then I'll wait.

The new software is good though. But it does seem to eat the battery even more than before.

I was disappointed in there being no 64Gb, when the chips were announced by Toshiba a while back, but I guess they came too late to be included in the iPhone production cycle. There's only enough room for one NAND flash chip, unlike the Touch which can take two, 'cos there's no comm gear inside. Also, the battery life should be significantly better, the battery is 16% bigger, and the A4 processor is less power hungry. The usage times seemed a fair bit better.

No…like zaskarcarbon I bought the HTC Desire a while back. Never used an iPhone but I use the multitasking on the Desire all the time…just hold down the home key and you get the last 6 applications used. All applications just resume where you left off. It would be a real pain not being able to flick between say a website's contact details and Google's free satnav to find out where the closest so-and-so is.

The only downside is the Android apps don't seem to be as wide ranging as the iphone apps, but I'm sure they will catch up in time.

Just checked mine – 3gb in just over a year, so no problem with the limit for me either. I s'pose you can also download more stuff on iTunes, then transfer it over anyway…. 🙂
