    The newel post at the top of the stairs has twisted. It’s pulled itself away from the banister a bit and looks cack.

    What to do? Seems very difficult to replace since the end of it’s all buried into the landing.

    They can be cut and spliced above the floor but its not really a DIY job I would have thought

    No, doesn’t seem like it. Tempted to use filler on the gap and hope no-one notices the bent post!

    Saw off and replace.

    Tricky to remove the handrails and you’ll need joinery skills, but doable.

    went to put new rails and spindals on the stairs in june, no problem like a challange me. knew something was wrong but just could not put my finger on it till i measured the 2 newel posts the one at the bottom of the stairs was 4″ shorter. took my chippy mate a good 1.1/2hrs with all the proper tools to put right.
