  • Where do you stand if a shop ruins your kit?

    Quick version: shock that was working fine for years goes in for a service, and comes out leaking nitrogen. Shop has now had the shock back for 6 weeks with various excuses about crap distributors and then just not being there for weeks! Currently, the part needed arrived, isn’t right and he’s “no idea” when he’ll get the replacement. General attitude hasn’t showed any hint of care so far, needed chasing for information and hasnt given any sign of admitting damaging the shock.

    Buy cheap, buy twice seems to apply as he undercuts all the “big” suspension places, and he also borked my Reverb at the same time. So, thoughts on how long you give someone in this situation? Then what? Refund of service cost (seems the obvious one) but what about the cost of replacing pricey kit whe. There’s currently no end in sight?

    Pick a busy time walk in and talk loudly about poor service, how long it’s taken to sort out etc.

    Repeat until problem resolved.

    Seems like you’ve got little leverage on and no interest from the owner at the moment.

    Take items back and send to ‘big’ suspension place and get sorted.

    Ride bike in susnshine and chalk it up to experience OR take to the internetz/small claims court and get your extra monies back,

    Get the shock back, send it to loco,mojo or tft, they’ll sort it, then get your money back from your local incompetent. That’ll be the hard part.

    Talk to them, tell them you’re not happy and want a refund.

    My garage serviced and MOTd my car and gave it back with the engine warning light on. I asked them to check it. They realised they’d knackered something, I said fine so long as you fix it FOC. They did. So they still have my business in future.

    If they won’t give you a refund, maybe trading standards?

    They should have insurance to cover them in this sort of situation. Let them know your grievance first as it may not be a big issue to them (yet) but is to you.

    Sometimes things do break when you work on them, but you need to sort it when it does and you need to try and do it quicker than 6 weeks.

    I once tried a local garage for a full service on a pair of forks. They are a motorbike specialist and have a good reputation for motorbike fork services and the staff all ride bikes so I took a chance. Never again, sometimes it’s worth the extra money for a proper job and quality service.

    tbh, absolutely no problem at all with something going wrong. Shit happens, but it’s about how you pick yourself up n all that…

    Don’t bother. I work in a garage and some guy was ranting about an engine light being on after an MOT. It can’t have been us as we only kicked the tyres. Took the fuse out and he was happy.

    walk into shop, and take bike/good to the amount of your shock, and tell him you shall return them once you shock is sorted.

    done this twice, once in currys and once in halfords. i got new replacements both times.

    i think this is quite legal too.

    I would give the shop a time limit to resolve and explain you have had enough. Say 5 days to have completely resolved and discounted or full refunds and kit back.

    When you say shock was working fine for years… Do you mean it was never serviced for years and when it finally went in for a service it was worked?

    Not sure what you mean at the end there. Shock was overdue a service but working fine. After service it lasted 2 days after which it was **** to the point of being unusable
