Can anyone tell me what the purpose of this bolt is please …

Is it meant to be really lose or tight.

    Thanks.

    It holds the brake together

Spring tension, to help centre the brake over the rim. Tighten/loosen it and apply then release the brake a few times to centre the brake blocks with respect to the rim.

Ok so when i turn it either way it tightens up but doesn’t seem to affect the brake at all ?

What are you trying to achieve?

It’s the caliper arm pivot that runs in a bush so it needs to be tight. Unscrew it and the caliper will fall apart.

Simon i want to make sure it’s done up properly.

It goes from tight to really loose to tight in either direction so I’m not sure which way it should be done up if that makes sense.

    It tightens clockwise.

In an effort to make up for my less than useful advice above…

Sounds like it’s partially seized or bent if it goes loose and then tight in both directions…….
