I know people who have gone into the LBS for a chainring and left with a full bike. Either he was super materialistic or that was one good salesman. Dunno if he bought the chainring...
went for a tour round dairy a week or two back, they had a creamery on site, the impressive part, two piles of pots, one a premium brand one a cheap brand, exactly the same contents went in. So you walk into a supermarket the two pots will be next to each other and the only difference will be the pot.

I think part of it is fear of being without possessions we need to live so we accumulate a surplus. Then in part it is for status. iWant. And a part that it will make us more satisfied with living.
