If you could change career and do anything what would you do?

I’ve been wanting to change careers for a while now. Restrictions on the missus incomings due to having two kids in the last 4 years has meant I’ve been stuck where I am. Youngest starts school this autumn and the lil one two years after so that’s my target. Hopefully by the end of 2014 I’ll be in a position to do something.

I’m thinking now is the time to start studying to get me in a better position come 2014.

The only problem is I’ve no idea what I fancy doing. I’ve been a Funeral Director for the last 11 years and a manager for the last 4. In the past I have fancied something like the police or fire service. This still appeals but I’ll be nearly 35 when I can change so I need to consider this.

Looking to do something open uni perhaps something like criminology and psychology that could see me in the right direction.

Ok so what career would you go for?
Anythings fair game as inspiration is needed but something related to the a I’ve would be handy.

Gravity sucks, ive always fancied being a funneral director, thats what our family did,sadly i didnt get the chance, as the comapny got sold.

Funeral Directing is an awesome career and I have and do love it but the challenge has gone and I don’t find it motivating any more so time to freshen things up. Runni g my own business wouldn’t really give me any new challenges as the business I manage now I pretty much run the lot anyway. Starting up on my own would just mean being on call 24 / 7 instead of the 1 week in 3 which is painful enough now!

I’ve got a friend who couldnt wait to get out of forensics and crime! Now does well and enjoys the “forensics” of hard drive failures (non criminal).

Also I’ve changed careers (totally non-crime / death related). All I can advise is find something you enjoy (or come across as enjoying) thats not your main hobby.

For the first time in a fair few months I’m buzzing about going to work, was starting to think about new roads to take but a few new projects has really refreshed me, a change is as good as a rest as they say. 🙂

its 4 hours a week 16 hours a month. 2 8 hour shifts.

Brewer? Seems like we don’t have many brew pubs in the UK the way they do in the US, so maybe a wee gap in the market for a small outfit. You could probably do a part time masters to learn the ropes.

Park ranger or forestry commission ranger. In 25 years that’s what I’m doing.

As previously mentioned; plane driver is meant to be alright although at your stage in life you wouldn’t be able to take advantage of all the orange birds that serve the coffee like a single man might. A friend qualified recently, I think he did a year near oxford at college and a few months practical in Nevada. Costs £80k though….

Got a feeling most newly qualifieds do a year at sleazyjet or ryanair because they are a cheap wage while they gain experience.

If I could have the last ten years again I would steer clear of college and uni and do an apprenticeship.

I quite fancy the idea of being a brewer. Big fan of US microbrews and can easily see a market for it here. however Mrs Atlaz isn’t keen on me taking over the spare room to experiment. What shed for backyard brewery perhaps?

I’ve been a special for about a year now and love it. You can fit the hours in around your lifestyle. It’s the only way into the Met now and I have no doubt that other forces will follow suit so now is a perfect time to start doing.

I’d carry on doing exactly what I’m doing now to be honest, the hourly rate is ‘kin brilliant, the work easy, (well,providing you spent the last 40 years practicing at least three different instruments for four hours a day.) and I’m still getting royalty cheques for work I produced twenty five years ago.

So I’m happy anyway.
